Matthew McConaughey is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood.

Now he’s making headlines for a different reason.

Actor Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, are back in the news for a different reason.

The celebrity couple launched their own brand of tequila last year, Pantalones Tequila.

And they’re using a unique marketing campaign to draw attention to the brand.

McConaughey and his wife have released a series of pictures and videos of them not wearing pants.

Pantalones is the Spanish word for pants.

McConaughey is working the grill without pants – with part of the picture blurred out – while his wife is smiling next to him for the Fourth of July-themed ad.

“Tan lines and grill marks,” the caption reads.

This is the latest ad in the campaign.

To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, McConaughey and his wife released a video of them playing pickleball sans pants while enjoying their tequila.

In the crowded celebrity liquor market, Pantalones is leaning into McConaughey’s laidback persona to promote it.

“We’re precious about our tequila, not our pants,” McConaughey and Alves said in a statement. “With the explosion in popularity of tequila, there’s a level of snootiness that’s crept into the category. People now talk about tequila the way they talk about wine. While we’re all for being passionate about tequila, we wanted to remind people that, above all, it’s meant to be fun.”

“That’s where the name Pantalones came from and that’s why you won’t see us wearing any,” the couple added.

Celebrity liquor endorsements on the rise 

The trend in Hollywood has been to lean on movie franchises like Marvel and Star Wars series that don’t require an A-list actor in the lead role.

More actors are looking for business opportunities outside of the movie industry.

Capitalizing on their fame through a liquor brand to build an income stream outside of Hollywood.

Former Van Halen lead singer Sammy Hagar was the pioneer of the celebrity tequila trend.

He launched his Cabo Wabo Tequila brand in the 1990s after spending part of his time in Mexico when he wasn’t on tour.

Celebrity tequila wasn’t a thing when Hagar started his brand.

“When I first started this, I didn’t want it to be a ‘celebrity’ brand,” Hagar told VinePair.

Hager later sold Cabo Wabo Tequila for $80 million in 2007.

That caused a flood of celebrities to follow in his footsteps by getting into the business.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michael Jordan, Justin Timberlake, and AC/DC have all launched their own tequila brands.

Hager returned to it in 2017 when he launched Santo Mezquila with Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine.

To differentiate themselves in a crowded celebrity tequila market, they created a blend of tequila and mezcal – another Mexican liquor made from agave.

Matthew McConaughey is riding a well-established trend in Hollywood and having some fun while he’s doing it.
