Actress Kelly Reilly calls Hollywood out for being phony

The Paramount Network series Yellowstone is in its last season with the second half of season five underway. 

After Kevin Costner’s bitter split with the show, the character Beth Dutton played by actress Kelly Reilly became one of the leads. 

Dutton became a ruthless businesswoman whose romance with Rip Wheeler, played by actor Cole Hauser, shows a different side of the character. 

Reilly has ignored the immense hype that’s built up around Yellowstone since the show debuted in 2018. 

“I don’t participate in the noise in any way. I stay out of it,” Reilly told Town & Country magazine. “The only safe place for me is in the work – and then home with my husband. Very boring.”

The British actress didn’t care for the Hollywood lifestyle. 

“It can become a cyclone of bulls*** and fakeness, and I know I won’t find my worth in that,” Reilly explained. 

Kelly Reilly came close to moving back to the United Kingdom 

She and her husband were set to move back to the United Kingdom in 2017 from New York City before she got the opportunity to star in Yellowstone. 

“I have always loved my job, but the business can sometimes present challenges that I didn’t feel I was cut out for,” Reilly stated. “I just wanted to go back to theater and do two or three plays a year, and live ­quietly. That didn’t feel like a second prize. It felt like a choice, the life I wanted to have.”

Reilly received a Yellowstone script and her life changed forever. 

“I remember reading it as I was packing up our apartment and thinking, Oh, s***. It was like laying down a bit of a gauntlet,” Reilly recalled. “The challenge of it pepped my interest.”

She spoke with series creator Taylor Sheridan and immediately landed the part of Beth Dutton. 

“I didn’t even audition,” Reilly said. “Then I was like, ‘F***, I didn’t audition.’ I was terrified, because I didn’t know how I was going to do it. And it took me a minute to find her.”

Reilly was drawn to the complexity of portraying Beth Dutton’s character. 

“It’s not just about playing strong, capable women,” Reilly explained. “That’s missing the point. Male characters can be messy, but they can still be heroic. Full spectrum. And I think there is a bravery to embracing shadow. How can you be an honest person if you don’t own some of your darkness?”  

Deadline reported that Yellowstone could continue for a sixth season with Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler as the lead characters. 

Negotiations are underway to keep the show going. 

Reilly isn’t ready to completely close the book on the character she made famous. 

“I am definitely interested in Beth, and who she is after some things have happened,” Reilly stated. “Who is she in peace? As an actor you’re like, ‘Ooh, let me at that.’ Wouldn’t it be fun to watch Beth go to therapy?”

Fans could see another season of the saga of the Dutton family with Beth getting the top billing.
