Bill Belichick just made a shocking announcement that could change the NFL

Jan 16, 2024

Things are always changing in the NFL.

But possibly, it is none bigger than the recent announcement of this legendary coach who has been changing the game for nearly a quarter of a century.

And Bill Belichick just made one shocking announcement that changed everything.

Legendary New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is leaving his position with the team after 24 seasons.

A mutual decision with no conflict

Belichick had been in meetings with Patriots owner Robert Kraft in the first weeks of 2024.

According to league sources, their discussions focused on how best to proceed with the team as Belichick takes a step back.

There is no conflict, disagreement, or ill will, between Belichick and Kraft, and both said they came to a mutual decision.

Belichick addressed his departure in a press conference last Thursday afternoon.

Even more surprising for a coach of Belichick’s stature is even though he still has one year left on his contract and only one year remaining on his contract, he will leave the team without seeking compensation.

And it looks like he’s not retiring from the game.

At least seven NFL teams have head coaching vacancies at the time, so NFL fans and pundits want to know if Belichick will head to one of them.

Or will he turn to announcing like John Madden before him?

Who’s gonna fill his shoes?

The other big question is just who is going to try and fill Belichick’s shoes as the next New England coach?

Kraft is reportedly looking at former Patriots linebacker coach Jerod Mayo.

Mayo played for the Patriots between 2008 and 2014, and he has served as an assistant coach under Belichick since 2019.

So many believe he is likely one of the top names in consideration for the job.

Belichick’s decision to leave the Patriots came within hours of Nick Saban announcing his retirement from the Alabama Crimson Tide and Pete Carroll’s retirement from the Seattle Seahawks.

It is part of a literal changing of the guard.

Belichick coached with Saban at the Cleveland Browns from 1991 to 1994 before Saben moved to the college ranks.

Many NFL pundits weren’t surprised when the rumors first broke of Belichick’s impending exit from the Patriots.

Kraft had been dead set on the Patriots making the playoffs this season, but with an abysmal 4-13 record and a last-place finish in the AFC East, the team was one of the first to be eliminated in December.

“It’s really been disappointing. I had hoped things would be a lot better, as I know our fan base did . . . This isn’t what we were expecting to happen this year,” Kraft said prior to the team’s November 12 game against the Indianapolis Colts in Frankfurt, Germany, which ended in yet another loss.

A big part of the pain the Patriots and their fans felt was the loss of star quarterback Tom Brady in 2019.

Since Brady’s departure, the Patriots have had losing records in three of the four of their seasons.
