California Vegan Chef Made One Dramatic Career Change That Proved Her Life Was a Lie

Mollie Engelhart built a vegan empire in Los Angeles with five restaurants preaching plant-based salvation.

Environmental activists held her up as proof that conscience and capitalism could coexist.

And a California vegan chef made one dramatic career change that proved her life was a lie.

The Confession That Shattered Everything

For over a decade, Engelhart ran Sage Vegan Bistro and KindKreme across Southern California.

She was the poster child for environmental activism through food.

"I started my vegan restaurants with a full-throated endorsement," Engelhart explained. "I was an environmentalist. I believed this was the pathway forward for humanity."¹

But a 2013 TED Talk about soil health shattered everything she thought she knew.

"It just clicked in my mind that cows were not the problem," she told Fox News Digital.²

She started her own farm to deal with food waste from her restaurants.

That's when she discovered the dirty secret the vegan movement doesn't want anyone to know.

"All organic food is fertilized by blood meal, bone meal, feather meal and chicken poop," Engelhart admitted. "That's all coming out of the consolidated feedlot system that the vegans hate."³

The entire vegan food system depends on the industrial animal agriculture it claims to oppose.

"There's no plate without death," she realized. "Life and death are two sides of the same coin."⁴

"My whole life was kind of a lie," Engelhart confessed.⁵

So Engelhart decided to transition her restaurants in 2024 to serve regeneratively raised meat alongside plant-based options.

That's when the real nightmare began.

The Vegan Mob Showed Their True Colors

The response from her former allies was swift and brutal.

"The vegans went completely crazy, throwing blood on the restaurant, coming in with loud horns, screaming, drums," Engelhart explained.⁶

Protesters stormed her Echo Park location with signs reading "Sage Kills for Profit" and bullhorns blaring recorded sounds of squealing pigs.⁷

They invaded the dining room, screaming at customers trying to eat dinner.

"It's not food, it's violence," the mob chanted while staff desperately tried to restore order.⁸

Engelhart called Los Angeles police multiple times.

They took three hours to show up.⁹

The attacks continued for months as vegan activists mounted an organized campaign to destroy her business.

These are the same people who lecture everyone about compassion and non-violence.

But when someone dares to question their ideology with facts, they turn into a violent mob throwing blood and terrorizing families.

Engelhart finally closed her last California restaurants in January 2025 during the wildfires.

But the vegan extremists weren't the only reason she left.

California's Regulatory Nightmare Made the Decision Easy

Engelhart had grown sick of California's suffocating bureaucracy that makes running a business nearly impossible.

"I just felt like that level of government involvement in every single interaction that we have to have was not something I was interested in," the 47-year-old mother of four told Fox News Digital.¹⁰

She called California's regulatory environment "intolerable."¹¹

The numbers back her up.

Mercatus Center researchers counted nearly 400,000 separate regulations strangling California businesses — more than any other state by a massive margin.¹²

The state ranks dead last on regulatory burden indexes from both the Cato Institute and Pacific Research Institute.¹³

Small businesses spend between $6,000 and $15,000 annually just complying with storm water discharge permits.¹⁴

Over 200 state agencies and commissions have authority to write and enforce regulations.

California's 13.3% income tax on high earners — the highest in the nation — applies to both regular income and investment gains.¹⁵

The state passed an average of 15 labor law changes per year from 1992 to 2002, four times the national average.¹⁶

Between 2018 and 2021, 352 company headquarters abandoned California.¹⁷

Major corporations like Chevron, Tesla, and Oracle fled to Texas and other states.¹⁸

Between 2022 and 2023, 700,000 California residents voted with their feet and left.¹⁹

"I wasn't interested in my kids growing up in California," Engelhart stated plainly.²⁰

So she packed up her family and moved to Texas.

What She's Doing Now Proves Everything Liberals Say About Food Is Wrong

Engelhart and her husband now raise cattle, pigs, lambs, and a small dairy herd on Sovereignty Ranch in Bandera, Texas.

She serves as co-executive chef at The Barn restaurant on the property.

The ranch operates on regenerative agriculture principles — the exact opposite of industrial farming methods that dominate both conventional and organic production.

Regenerative farming uses six core principles: farming for your specific environment, minimizing soil disturbance, promoting biodiversity, maximizing living plant roots, reducing chemicals, and integrating animals into the land.²¹

"There's a huge overlap between healthy soil and healthy humans," Engelhart explained.²²

She discovered what environmentalists won't admit — you can't have healthy soil without animals.

The food sold in American grocery stores today largely didn't exist 100 years ago.

Neither did the metabolic diseases plaguing Americans.

"Food is medicine" isn't a wellness catchphrase to Engelhart — it's the foundation of human health.

"I think we've moved far away from the way God intended food to be, and I think we need to move back to eating foods in their whole form," she stated.²³

Her new book "Debunked by Nature" argues that Mother Nature is inherently conservative.

The constructs leftists push — from gender ideology to agricultural policy — don't exist when examined through nature's lens.

"The constructs of the world that the liberal sphere is trying to make us lie about all the time — if you look into nature, they don't exist," Engelhart explained. "Largely, they're made up."²⁴

Engelhart's story exposes two inconvenient truths Democrats can't handle.

First, the environmental movement built on lies about animal agriculture has radicalized into a violent mob that attacks businesses and terrorizes anyone who questions their dogma.

Second, California's regulatory state has become so oppressive that even lifelong progressives are fleeing to red states where families can thrive and businesses can operate without government strangling every transaction.

Democrats in Sacramento keep piling on regulations while companies and residents evacuate in record numbers.

The vegan chef who once preached that plant-based diets would save the planet now raises cattle in Texas and calls California's government "intolerable."

That tells you everything about which policies actually work.
