Internet fashion icon Tika the Iggy passes away after surgery complications
Tika the Iggy, the Italian Greyhound who took the fashion world by storm, died November 4th at age 14 after complications from liver surgery.¹
The tiny fashionista had amassed 1.6 million Instagram followers and 3.1 million TikTok followers by posing in elaborate designer outfits that would make runway models jealous.²
Thomas Shapiro and his husband Louis, Tika's devoted owners from Montreal, announced the heartbreaking news on social media.
"Tika, I really thought you were going to live forever," Shapiro wrote. "I thought we had more time, but there are things we cannot control. Our hearts are shattered."³
The couple revealed that veterinarians had recently discovered two tumors in Tika's liver.
Despite a successful surgery to remove the tumors, Tika's condition deteriorated after returning home.
"After your second day at home, something had changed. You looked so tired, not quite yourself, yet peaceful," Shapiro explained.⁴
Veterinarians initially thought the changes were side effects from pain medication, but Tika's body was "slowly giving up."
The fashionable pup spent her final moments at home, held by her "favorite dads."
From runway shows to red carpet premieres
Tika wasn't just another cute pet with a social media account.
She was a legitimate fashion phenomenon who walked runways in Milan, Paris, and New York.⁵
Vogue called her "a new fashion It girl" while The Dogist dubbed her "The Anna Wintour of Dogs."⁶
The tiny greyhound appeared on major TV shows including The Drew Barrymore Show and made a cameo in the Netflix series Geek Girl.
Tika even rubbed shoulders with A-list celebrities like Lizzo and Drew Barrymore during her career.⁷
