Stapleton Opens Up About Crossroads In His Career

The "Tennessee Whiskey" singer appeared on Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast in January and made a stunning admission.

Stapleton revealed he's at a crossroads in his career and doesn't know when he'll write another song or release another record.

"I don't know how much longer I'll even go play – I don't know," Stapleton said.

The 47-year-old admitted he's "not really in the mood" to continue at his current pace.

That's when the conversation turned to his famous beard.

Shepard joked that Stapleton has what he calls the "ZZ Top thing" going on.

He could shave his beard someday and walk around in complete anonymity.

Stapleton confirmed the beard is part of his "retirement plan."

Without that iconic facial hair, nobody would recognize the country superstar walking down the street.

Fame Hit Stapleton Like A Freight Train

Stapleton never wanted to be famous.

He released his debut album Traveller in May 2015 hoping it would be just successful enough to make another record.

"I've done more than I've ever set out to do," Stapleton reflected. "Now I have to get a new dream."

The award-winning musician has sold more than 10 million albums in the United States alone.

He's received several awards from the Grammys, ACMs, and CMAs.

His rendition of "Tennessee Whiskey" recently became the first-ever country song to be certified double diamond by the RIAA.

Stapleton has accomplished everything he set out to do and then some.

Looking For The Fire

Stapleton made it clear he's not announcing retirement.

But he's not ruling it out either.

"I'm not saying I'm hanging up my spurs," Stapleton clarified. "I'm just saying I'm looking for the fire. I need the fire."

That fire drove him from his Kentucky hometown to Nashville where he became one of Music City's most sought-after songwriters.

He penned hits for artists like Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, Tim McGraw, and Adele before his own performing career took off.

Now that fire is flickering.

Stapleton's honesty about struggling to find motivation shocked fans who assumed his career was on cruise control.
