Commerce Secretary Admitted the Tariffs Are the Only Reason This Iowa Mega Plant Exists

Sep 29, 2026

Under Joe Biden, nearly two hundred thousand American manufacturing jobs vanished in one brutal year for steel country.

Now Iowa is getting the very steel plant Democrats spent nine years trying to bury in red tape.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick just admitted on camera the one reason none of it would exist.

Minnesota's Mining Industry Spent a Decade under Siege from Democrats

President Trump stood in the Oval Office Monday and announced a $15 billion steel plant headed for Iowa.

Mesabi Metallics is building it.

The White House is calling it the largest steel plant in American history, and the first plant of its scale built anywhere in the country since the 1960s.

It will produce 7.5 million tons of steel a year, ramping toward 10 million tons, and create 1,750 permanent jobs.

That's the number Trump wants you to remember.

But the more important number is the one Democrats hope you forget.

The iron ore for this plant comes from a Minnesota mining operation that spent nearly two decades trapped in bankruptcy court before finally getting moving again.

That's not the only Minnesota mine Democrats sabotaged.

Barack Obama denied the federal lease renewals for a separate Minnesota copper-nickel mine back in 2016.

Biden's administration killed those same leases for good in 2022, then locked up 225,504 acres of the Superior National Forest from mining for the next two decades.

Regulators also pulled a key federal water permit for yet another stalled Minnesota mine.

In Alaska, they killed a planned 211-mile road that would have unlocked a major copper and cobalt mining district.

And in 2024, Biden's regulators buried taconite processing and coke-oven operations – the backbone of American steelmaking – under a new round of rules, all while tariff loopholes let cheap foreign steel keep pouring in.

Trump reversed every one of those decisions.

Mesabi's Minnesota mine has now started producing, with full commercial output expected within about a year.

For the first time since 1999, American mills out-produced Japan last year, making the United States the world's third-largest steelmaker.

Democrats didn't build any of that.

They spent years fighting it while lecturing you about "American jobs."

Lutnick Just Confirmed the Tariffs Democrats Called a Disaster Are What Built This Plant

Trump imposed 25% tariffs on foreign steel early in his second term.

He doubled them to 50% last year.

Every liberal economist on television told you that would wreck American manufacturing.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stood next to Trump on Monday and said the opposite happened.

"These are your 232 tariffs – the steel tariffs – at work," Lutnick said.

"Without those tariffs, this mine doesn't get built, and this steel plant does not get built."

That's not spin.

That's the Commerce Secretary of the United States telling you, on camera, that the policy Democrats spent a year screaming about is the exact reason a $15 billion American factory now exists.

Trump put it even more bluntly.

"Everyone's building their plant here because they don't want to pay tariffs," he said.

The plant will source ore mined in Minnesota, moved by American rail, melted in Iowa, and turned into high-grade steel capable of meeting Navy defense requirements.

Mine to mill, entirely on American soil, for the first time in generations.

Steel industry groups sent Trump a letter days before Monday's announcement, crediting his tariffs with driving $47 billion in new investment nationwide and urging him not to weaken them now.

They understand what Democrats refuse to admit: cheap foreign steel didn't build American towns, it emptied them.

The timing isn't an accident either.

Iowa Republicans are fighting to hold the governor's mansion and a Senate seat next month, and Trump used the announcement to praise Senate candidate Ashley Hinson by name before promising Iowa a rally before the midterms.

By 2030 This Plant Becomes a Problem Democrats Can't Explain Away

This plant is a receipt.

For a decade, Democrats told working-class Americans that manufacturing jobs were never coming back, that steel towns just had to adjust to decline.

Then Trump slapped tariffs on foreign steel, and companies that once shipped jobs to Canada and Mexico started building "mega" plants in Iowa instead.

Cleveland-Cliffs is now idling part of its plant in Hamilton, Ontario, and laying off hundreds of workers, citing pressure from American steel tariffs.

That's a Canadian steel town losing jobs because Washington finally made it more profitable to build here instead of there.

Trump watched Washington give that leverage away for free for thirty years, and he just cashed it in for iron, ore, and paychecks in a battleground state.

The plant won't pour its first steel until 2030, which means Democrats will spend the next four years pretending none of this happened.

Don't let them.
