Costco Just Sold Out a Bourbon That Flipped the Hot Dog Deal Upside Down

Apr 4, 2026

Costco has held the line on its one dollar and fifty cents hot dog since 1985 – one of the most defiant acts of corporate loyalty in American history.

Now somebody put that hot dog on a bourbon bottle for just under $86.

It sold out in hours, and resellers are asking $1,000 for it and people want to know what makes it that special.

Costco Hot Dog Bourbon Sells Out in Hours With $1,000 Resale Prices

The bottle is called "I Got That Dog in Me." It's a single-barrel Kentucky straight bourbon from Rare Character Whiskey – 11 years and 4 months old, bottled at 126.1 proof, with Costco's iconic food court hot dog and soda combo on the label.

Rare Character co-founder Pete Nevenglosky confirmed the details to Fox News Digital.

The release hit one Washington, D.C.-area Costco location in late March – no app listing, no advertising, one bottle per membership.

By 9:45 a.m. the morning after it hit shelves, it was gone.

Fewer than 300 bottles were sold, by most estimates.

Reddit lit up immediately.

Shoppers who got one described the flavor: oak, marshmallow, cinnamon, cardamom – and a finish that goes on forever.

The $1.50 Hot Dog That Stayed the Same Price for 40 Years

The math here is almost poetic.

Costco's hot dog combo has sat at $1.50 since 1985 – unchanged through four decades of inflation, three CEOs, and a soda supplier swap.

When then-CEO Craig Jelinek floated a price increase in 2013, founder Jim Sinegal shut it down with the most legendary corporate directive in retail history.

Jelinek found another way to cut costs and kept the hot dog at a buck fifty.

In fiscal year 2025, Costco sold 245 million of those combos.

The whole thing functions as a promise – Costco's standing declaration that it will not squeeze its members even when the rest of the country is getting fleeced at every checkout line.

Now a bottle of bourbon celebrating that promise is flipping on resale markets at 667 times the original price.

The people asking $1,000 for it aren't chasing the whiskey.

They're chasing the story.

Rare Character Whiskey and the Limited Release That Started a Buying Frenzy

Rare Character built its brand around exactly this dynamic.

The Las Vegas operation – co-founded by entrepreneur Pete Nevenglosky and hospitality veteran Pablo Moix – stakes out exceptional single barrels from distillers across the country, puts original artwork on each label, and releases them in quantities small enough to guarantee scarcity.

The Costco collaboration came from Costco's own D.C. regional team, who commissioned a barrel themed around the $1.50 combo and the "got that dog in me" slang – a phrase used to describe someone with grit and heart.

Nevenglosky confirmed the release was one single barrel.

He also signaled plans to expand the concept beyond D.C.

If the sellout is any indication, those shelves won't last until noon either.

The Real Story Here

Here's what nobody is saying out loud.

Costco kept a hot dog at $1.50 for 41 years because membership fees – not food court margins – fund the whole operation.

Membership fees account for 64% of Costco's profits.

The hot dog isn't a product.

It's a handshake.

It tells members: prices are brutal out there, and we've got your back on this one thing that will never change.

That promise, kept for four decades through inflation and CFO turnover and soda supplier negotiations, is what makes 95% of Costco members renew every single year.

Americans who grew up eating a dollar-fifty lunch after a Costco run – and who watched every other price on the planet go through the roof – will fork over four digits to own a piece of that.

That's not a novelty item.

That's brand loyalty you can drink.
