Declassified Transcripts Used in Angel Studios’ New Film Detail Reagan’s Courageous Stand Against Gorbachev

Their new film built from those declassified transcripts finally shows what was really said inside the room and the actor playing the president caught everyone off guard.

Jeff Daniels has spent years telling MSNBC audiences exactly what he thinks of President Trump.

He said the AI video Trump posted mocking "No Kings" protesters crossed a line no decent president would cross.

Sitting across from host Nicolle Wallace, Daniels ran through the list of presidents he claimed would never sink that far.

"Reagan wouldn't have done it," Daniels said.

Neither would Nixon, he added. Neither would either Bush.

Back in 2019 Daniels was even blunter about what he wanted from the opposition.

He told late night audiences the party needed a nominee who could "punch him in the face."

That comment came on national television, not a stray tweet he could later delete.

Daniels has repeated versions of the same message for six straight years across multiple networks.

Every appearance follows the same pattern: Trump falls short according to Daniels, and some Republican in the past supposedly would have known better.

Angel Tapped Daniels For a Role Few Anticipated

None of that stopped Angel Studios from handing Daniels the role of Ronald Reagan himself.

Daniels stars as Reagan in "The Brink of War," which reconstructs the two tense days in Iceland when Reagan and Gorbachev tried to talk their way out of the arms race face to face.

Jared Harris plays Gorbachev.

J.K. Simmons plays Reagan's secretary of state George Shultz, the man who handed director Michael Gunn the declassified transcripts that built the script.

Gunn spent hours with Shultz before writing a word.

He called the summit a story about two leaders who "had every reason to hate each other" and sat down anyway.

Hope Davis plays Nancy Reagan.

The film hits theaters August 14.

Angel Studios built its brand serving the very audience that has watched Daniels mock their president for a decade.

That audience made "Sound of Freedom" a surprise smash and turned Angel into a real box office player.

They bought tickets expecting a studio that respects Reagan's legacy, not an actor who has spent years arguing that legacy is dead.

Casting directors do not usually hand the lead role in a conservative icon's biopic to his loudest MSNBC critic.

Hollywood Cast the Wrong Critic for This Role

Every insult Daniels has lobbed at Trump rests on one assumption: that real strength looks like decency and dialogue, not confrontation.

Reykjavik proves that assumption wrong.

Walking away from a bad deal was never weakness.

It built the treaty Reagan is remembered for.

Trump is betting the same walk-away strength gets him a stronger deal than the one Reagan settled for.

Call it reckless if that is the instinct.

Reagan's own team heard that exact word in 1986, right before that walkout produced the INF Treaty and helped end the Cold War.

Daniels can deliver every line Michael Gunn wrote for him this August.

He can wear Reagan's suit, borrow Reagan's posture, and stand in the exact room where Reagan refused to blink.

What he cannot do is unsay six years of MSNBC appearances insisting men like Reagan no longer exist in the Republican Party.
