Democrats Pushed Their AI Jobs Apocalypse for Three Years and the Unemployment Rate Never Moved

Bernie Sanders spent three years warning America that AI would throw millions of workers into the street.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics kept adding jobs every single quarter.

Now Democrats just introduced a brand-new federal bureaucracy to fix the catastrophe that never arrived – and you're going to pay for it.

What the Actual Unemployment Numbers Show

Sanders stood at a press conference in April and demanded: "How the hell do you go forward and throw millions of people out on the street without planning what's going to happen?"

AOC told Americans in December 2025 that an "overwhelming majority" of them now fear permanent unemployment from AI.

Elizabeth Warren declared in June that "if AI could disrupt half the workforce, we can't wait until people lose their jobs to act."

One problem: they never lost their jobs.

Since ChatGPT launched in late 2022, the U.S. has added non-farm payroll jobs every single year.

Unemployment has stayed below 4.5% the entire time.

The Wall Street Journal found that companies which had frozen junior hiring in anticipation of AI went back to recruiting once the replacement never materialized.

Democrats predicted the apocalypse.

The economy ignored them.

The New Deal for a Crisis That Doesn't Exist

That didn't stop Rep. Greg Casar, chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, from introducing the AI Tax and Work Protection Act last week.

The bill would tax companies that develop or sell large AI models – and separately tax companies that use those models to reduce their workforces.

Revenue would fund a brand-new federal agency: the Work Protection Administration, housed inside the Department of Labor.

Casar said his inspiration was FDR's Works Progress Administration from the Great Depression.

The Great Depression had 25% unemployment.

The current unemployment rate is 4.3%.

Casar also wants automatic tax increases that kick in whenever unemployment tops 5%.

Rep. Sara Jacobs sold it this way: "If Congress does nothing, the rise of AI could create the biggest wealth transfer in history from the bottom to the top."

Democrats aren't solving a crisis.

They're building a bureaucracy and a tax regime on top of a phantom emergency – and hoping nobody checks the actual job numbers.

AI Job Loss Fears Have Been Wrong Every Time for 200 Years

This exact panic has happened before – and before that, and before that.

In 1961, TIME magazine ran a cover story warning about "The Automation Jobless."

In 1982, the Associated Press questioned whether personal computers would leave Americans permanently unemployed.

In 1995, the Federal Reserve was analyzing the "death" of the middle-class office role.

Every time, the doomsday predictions failed.

Every time, the economy created jobs nobody had imagined.

Nobody in 1902 predicted that air conditioning would someday employ 400,000 Americans as mechanics and installers alone.

Nobody in 1955 predicted the suburban auto mechanic, the cable television repairman, or the satellite dish installer.

The jobs that don't exist yet are always invisible – and they always show up.

Economists call the recurring Democratic panic the "Luddite Fallacy" – the belief, wrong every single time across 200 years of American history, that technology destroys more jobs than it creates.

Richard Stern, an economist with Advancing American Freedom, put it plainly: "Do you trust a million nameless, faceless entrepreneurs and innovators? Or do you trust the government?"

Democrats always pick the government.

Why Democrats Are Using AI Layoffs to Build Their 2028 Campaign

Casar telegraphed the real agenda when he urged Democratic presidential hopefuls to stop taking money from AI companies and start running against Silicon Valley.

"If someone wants to win the presidential nomination, they should start taking these cues now," Casar said.

This isn't about protecting workers.

It's about finding a villain for 2028 – and AI companies, the most profitable and visible industry in America right now, make a convenient target.

Tax AI tokens.

Create a new federal agency.

Promise workers government jobs in child care, health care, and infrastructure funded by taxing the technology that's actually driving American productivity.

Trump's former deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich laid out the alternative: "President Trump's AI boom will only make the American worker more productive – and more employable – than ever before."

One side trusts American workers to adapt, as they have adapted every generation.

The other side is building a 1930s relief agency for a depression that exists only in their campaign messaging.

The numbers say Sanders, Warren, and Casar are wrong.

They just haven't updated the talking points yet.
