Doritos Just Dropped A Bag Nobody Expected and It Changes Everything About Snack Time

Mar 3, 2026

Doritos has been on your snack shelf for more than sixty years.

For six decades, nobody at Frito-Lay thought to mess with the formula – and they were right not to.

Now they've done something to the most iconic chip in America that nobody saw coming, and once you hear what it is, you're going to want to find it at your grocery store.

Doritos Protein Chips Are Hitting Shelves in March

PepsiCo revealed this week that Doritos Protein tortilla-style chips are hitting store shelves in March – the same bold flavor and satisfying crunch you've known since 1964, now packed with 10 grams of protein per one-ounce serving.

That's five times more protein than the original Doritos delivers.

The new chips use casein – a dairy-based protein that contains all nine essential amino acids and is listed as the first ingredient on the package – and they're free of artificial colors and flavors.

Two classic flavors launch first: Nacho Cheese and Sweet & Tangy BBQ, available in 7-ounce bags for $4.89 and 12.75-ounce bags for $7.39 at select retailers next month.

Later in 2026, PepsiCo plans a single-serve bag with 17 grams of protein per bag – nearly as much protein as three eggs.

Why the Food Industry Finally Stopped Punishing You for Snacking

Americans have been lied to about snacking for forty years.

Low-fat crackers that tasted like cardboard. Rice cakes that crumbled into dust. Fat-free cookies that made you feel virtuous for about ten seconds before you realized you'd been cheated out of actual food.

The food industry spent decades telling you that eating well meant giving things up – less flavor, less crunch, less everything that made a snack worth eating.

Doritos just proved that was always a lie.

"When we set out to create this product, we wanted to ensure we were delivering that unmistakable snacking experience, but in a new way with the added benefit of protein," said Jess Spaulding, VP of Marketing at PepsiCo Foods U.S. "As consumer desires shift, we're showing that Doritos is a brand that can evolve and expand with those desires, offering consumers the best of both worlds – delicious taste, as well as new functional ingredients."

The whole idea: give people more without taking anything away.

High Protein Chips That Actually Taste Like Doritos

There's a reason Doritos has been in American homes since 1964.

It never tried to be something it wasn't.

While other snack brands chased every fad – fat-free this, low-carb that, plant-based everything – Doritos stayed Doritos.

That track record is exactly why this matters.

PepsiCo's own research found that 86% of Americans are actively adding more protein to their diets, and 70% want their salty snacks to deliver it.

That's not a fringe health trend.

That's most of the country – including plenty of people who haven't set foot in a gym since Reagan was in the White House and just want a snack that does something useful.

The Bottom Line for Your Next Grocery Run

Doritos Protein isn't replacing the classic bag you already love.

PepsiCo made that crystal clear – this is an addition to the lineup, not a swap.

The original stays exactly where it's always been.

Grab a bag during the game on Saturday. Toss one in a lunch box. Keep them at the office or in the car.

Ten grams of protein in something that actually tastes like Doritos is the kind of thing that would have seemed impossible not long ago – and it's a reminder that when American companies focus on what their customers actually want instead of what some committee in a boardroom thinks they should want, everybody wins.
