EVs are much more dangerous than you think, according to this new study

While the Biden administration keeps trying to force more people into electric cars, consumer demand keeps shrinking.

It’s not just the high cost.

People are realizing that EVs don’t drive as far as advertised, maintenance is a problem, and many are wondering about where they are going to get the power to run these things.

And now, this brand-new study has just revealed that there are even more reasons not to buy EVs after it uncovered serious safety threats.

Guardrails can’t handle electric vehicles

The University of Nebraska just revealed the results from a new study that indicate the nation’s guardrails cannot handle crashes from electric vehicles.

The study was sponsored by the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), and the university says that the research is the first of its kind.

According to faculty at the university, thousands of fatalities result every year from over 10,000 crashes that involve traffic infrastructure, including roadside barriers like guardrails.

EVs weigh thousands of pounds more than a traditional gas-powered sedan.

A group of engineers with the university’s Midwest Roadside Safety Facility ran test crashes using an electric-powered pickup truck and a Tesla sedan.

The vehicles were hurtled toward guardrails – the same kind Americans find along tens of thousands of miles of roads and highways throughout the country.

The newly released report concluded that the nation’s guardrails are not able to handle the force of vehicles that weigh more than 5,000 pounds.

This report comes as transportation officials have been raising serious concerns about the weight differences between new, heavier EVs and lighter gas-powered vehicles.

The National Transportation Safety Board expressed worries about the safety risks of heavy electric vehicles if or when they collide with lighter vehicles just last year.

While some road safety officials and organizations say EVs seem to provide a higher level of protection in comparison to their gas-powered counterparts, they also pose a real danger to occupants of lighter vehicles.

A Rivian truck that was tested in Nebraska showed almost zero damage to the cab’s interior after it slammed into a concrete barrier.

Most of the weight of electric vehicles comes from their massive batteries, which are needed to get a travel range of approximately 300 miles per charge.

These EV batteries can weigh almost as much as one small gas-powered car by itself, making them around 20 to 50 percent heavier than gas-powered vehicles in total.

EVs have several faults

The concern about safety crashes into guardrails is just one thing that analysts are worried about.

Electric vehicles also have a lower center of gravity, and researchers say the extra weight can affect everything from causing faster wear on residential driveways and streets to causing damage to parking garages, along with causing premature wear on the vehicle’s tires.

According to Michael Brooks, executive director of the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety, “A lot of these parking structures were built to hold vehicles that weighed 2,000 to 4,000 pounds – not 10,000 pounds.”

Brooks says that what needs to happen is “more collaboration between transportation engineers and vehicle manufacturers.”

“That’s where you might see some real change,” he added.
