Former Maryland defensive back Avantae Williams was arrested and now faces serious murder charges that could end his freedom for decades.

Football star’s night out ends in tragedy
Avantae Williams, a 24-year-old former defensive back for the University of Maryland, was arrested Monday by the DeLand Police Department in Florida.
Williams now faces second-degree murder charges involving a firearm after allegedly shooting and killing 32-year-old Keshod Harris during what began as a typical night out at a local bar.
Police responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 1:30 a.m. when what started as a fistfight involving several men quickly spiraled out of control.
According to law enforcement, witnesses described a chaotic scene where Williams allegedly produced a firearm during the altercation before fleeing the scene.
The victim, Harris, was rushed to a nearby hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
A bartender caught in the crossfire also suffered gunshot wounds but is expected to survive.
Deland Police confirmed in their statement that Williams was taken into custody “without incident” just days after the shooting.
“At this time, this remains an open and active investigation,” the DeLand Police Department said in their official statement.
“Detectives still continue to collect evidence and conduct interviews with people concerning the facts and circumstances of this shooting incident. Approximately 40 patrons were inside McCabe’s Bar on the night of the incident and they may have information that will help bring justice in this case.”
A promising career derailed by controversy
Before this incident, Williams had once been regarded as one of the nation’s top football prospects.
Williams was the top-rated safety in his recruiting class according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, being heavily recruited by college football powerhouses including Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, and Penn State.
The talented defensive back initially played two seasons at Miami before transferring to Maryland for his final college season.
But this isn’t Williams’ first brush with the law.
Back in 2021, Williams faced assault charges stemming from an alleged incident involving a pregnant woman. Those charges were later dismissed, but his legal troubles appear far from over now.
A community in shock
The shooting has left the DeLand community reeling, with approximately 40 bar patrons witnessing the deadly confrontation.
Law enforcement is continuing to interview witnesses and gather evidence as they build their case against the former college standout.
For Williams, who once had professional football aspirations after starring for the Miami Hurricanes and Maryland Terrapins, his future now involves a potential life sentence rather than a life in professional sports.
Had Williams controlled his temper and walked away from the confrontation, a man would still be alive today, and his own promising future wouldn’t be hanging in the balance.
The case serves as yet another tragic example of how quickly violence can escalate and permanently alter lives in mere seconds.
Williams is currently being held without bail as he awaits his first court appearance on the second-degree murder charges.
