Healeys Massachusetts Welcome Family Handout Reveals What Nurses Check Inside Your Home

Sep 22, 2026

A Massachusetts jury couldn't agree whether a mother who killed her three kids belongs in prison.

Governor Maura Healey says her answer is sending a government nurse into every new parent's home.

But the state's own program materials admit the visit covers something far more invasive than a diaper check.

Healey's Two Million Dollar Home Visit Pitch Covers Every Newborn in Massachusetts

Healey announced a $2 million expansion of the state's Welcome Family program last week.

The pitch is simple on its face – free, voluntary home visits from a maternal health nurse for every one of the roughly 68,000 babies born in Massachusetts each year.

The program's reach right now: barely 3,000 births a year.

That's a twenty-two fold jump in one budget cycle, from a small pilot to a promise touching every crib in the commonwealth.

Healey put it bluntly on Boston Public Radio: every new parent should expect a home visit, and a nurse will make what she called an "assessment."

Notice that word.

Not a checkup. Not a visit.

An assessment – of you, in your own house.

The Welcome Family Handout Lists What Every Home Visit Actually Covers

The nurse checks the baby, that much is expected.

But the program's own family handout says the visit also covers "ensuring that your home is safe."

Two or three weeks after that first visit, the state calls back to check whether you followed its advice.

That's a callback built into a program state officials describe as purely optional.

Conservatives online did not wait long to react.

"Stay out of our homes you power hungry creep," Libs of TikTok wrote on X in a post viewed more than two million times.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., posted that "the government DOES NOT OWN your baby," and told her followers to go re-read Orwell's 1984.

Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-Mont., needed two words: "Lunatic libs."

Massachusetts GOP chair Amy Carnevale called it "an example of the government overreaching."

Carnevale, a mother of three herself, told Fox News Digital that plenty of resources already exist for new mothers without a state employee walking through the front door to check.

Government Overreach Home Visits Already Passed in Three Blue States

This is not a new idea, and that is exactly the problem.

Oregon rolled out a nearly identical "voluntary" home visit program back in 2019.

New Jersey followed in 2021 under Gov. Phil Murphy, branding it Family Connects NJ.

Illinois signed its own version into law this year, and even the Illinois Family Institute warned that "voluntary" programs like this have a way of becoming something else entirely.

Every single one of these programs launched with the same word: voluntary.

Every single one of these programs asked taxpayers to fund government employees walking into private homes to evaluate parents.

Healey is not innovating.

She is running the same playbook Oregon, New Jersey, and Illinois already ran, just with a bigger price tag and a tragedy to point to.

What the Welcome Family Expansion Really Means for Massachusetts Parents

Here's what fires people up about this story: Healey is using a genuine tragedy to sell a government-in-your-nursery program that was built on a model years older than the Clancy trial.

The Welcome Family expansion isn't a response to one mother's crisis – it's a pre-packaged blue-state playbook, tested in three other states, dusted off and relabeled the moment cameras turned to Massachusetts.

Watch how the language shifts the moment someone pushes back. "Voluntary" starts sounding a lot like "everybody in the state" gets a visit, and a courtesy call two weeks later starts sounding a lot like a compliance check with a clipboard.

A wellness check doesn't usually come with a follow-up to make sure you did what you were told.

That's not a nurse visit anymore. That's a home inspection with a lullaby playing in the background.
