Giorgio Armani built a fashion empire that left Hollywood speechless for decades.
Silverscreen stars are surely in shock wondering who’s next.
Because Hollywood was just rocked after news about fashion magnet Giorgio Armani.
The fashion legend who changed how America dressed
The fashion world lost one of its greatest icons, Giorgio Armani.
The legendary Italian designer dressed everyone from Richard Gere to Julia Roberts over the course of an incredible rags-to-riches career that began in Italy and eventually became an American dream.
Armani’s fashion house announced Thursday that the designer "passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones."¹
The press release revealed that Armani "worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections, and the many ongoing and future projects."²
This wasn’t some trust fund kid playing dress-up with daddy’s money.
Armani was born in 1934 in Piacenza, Italy, and never planned to become a fashion designer.
He studied medicine for three years before leaving to serve his military service.
After the military, he got a job as a window dresser at a department store in Milan.
But Armani had bigger plans.
He worked his way up to buyer, then moved into design in the mid-1960s, working for designer Nino Cerruti.
In 1975, he took the biggest risk of his life – he started his own label with his business partner Sergio Galeotti.
The gamble paid off immediately.
How Armani conquered America with power suits
Armani revolutionized men’s fashion by deconstructing traditional suits and making them with softer fabrics and a looser, fuller fit.
His signature style became the blueprint for success in 1980s America.
Richard Gere’s Armani wardrobe in the 1980 film American Gigolo launched the brand into the American consciousness.
The hit TV series Miami Vice cemented the look – T-shirts paired with Armani-style blazers became the uniform of American cool.
American businessmen couldn’t get enough of Armani power suits.
The Italian designer had cracked the code on American success.
But Armani wasn’t done conquering America.
He moved from Wall Street to Hollywood, dressing the biggest stars in the world.
Julia Roberts wore a menswear-inspired Armani suit to the 1990 Golden Globes that she picked "right off the rack."³
"I loved the shape of it," Roberts told InStyle. "For me, this was the epitome of being dressed up."⁴
A master class in building a business empire
Armani’s success came down to one simple formula that modern entrepreneurs should study.
"Eighty percent of what I do is discipline," he told How to Spend It. "The rest is creativity."⁵
He refused to chase trends and stuck to his vision.
"I have never been interested in being trendy for the sake of it," Armani explained in a 2017 interview. "I have my own vision and ideas and am not afraid to go countercurrent."⁶
His approach worked because he focused on making clothes that were relevant to everyday life.
"If you make clothes that are not part of the world we live in, they will be meaningless," he told Business of Fashion. "This is very important and it is the real reason why I’m still here after 40 years."⁷
The price of unprecedented success
Building a fashion empire required total dedication.
Armani admitted to GQ that his success came at a personal cost.
"But I understood, too, that success like this requires total commitment, if it is going to take on a life of its own," he said. "I’m disappointed that many times I had to give up relationships for work."⁸
But Armani lived with no regrets about the choices he made.
"In reality, though, I have no regrets. I did what I wanted," he stated.⁹
What Armani’s legacy really means
Look, here’s what made Giorgio Armani special in an age of overnight influencers and social media fashion brands.
The man built his empire the old-fashioned way – through discipline, vision, and an unwavering commitment to quality.
He didn’t chase every trend or try to reinvent himself every season to stay relevant.
Armani found what worked and perfected it for 50 years.
His employees and family released a statement that shows what real leadership looks like.
"In this company, we have always felt like part of a family," they wrote. "Today, with deep emotion, we feel the void left by the one who founded and nurtured this family with vision, passion, and dedication. But it is precisely in his spirit that we, the employees and the family members who have always worked alongside Mr. Armani, commit to protecting what he built and to carrying his company forward in his memory, with respect, responsibility, and love."¹⁰
That’s the kind of business culture that built America.
Armani proved you can achieve incredible success without compromising your values or abandoning the principles that got you there.
In a world of fast fashion and disposable trends, Giorgio Armani represented something timeless – the idea that excellence never goes out of style.
