It all stems back to their 1997 slasher hit I Know What You Did Last Summer, where both actresses played teen victims of a hook-wielding killer stalking the fictional town of Southport.

In a recent interview with Vulture, Hewitt dropped a bombshell that completely deflated decades of speculation. The 46-year-old actress revealed she hasn’t spoken to Gellar since she was 18 years old, when the original movie premiered.¹

"I honestly don’t even know what that was or how that all came to be," Hewitt said of the rumored bad blood between her and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum. "I just think people don’t want the narrative to be easy. Why do we always have to be against each other and out for each other?"²

The entertainment press has been obsessed with pitting successful actresses against each other since the dawn of time. Two young, beautiful women with three names rising to fame at the same time? The tabloids couldn’t resist manufacturing a rivalry where none existed.

Hewitt continued with perhaps the most revealing statement of all: "I haven’t seen Sarah. Literally, we’ve not talked since I saw her at 18 years old when the first movie came out. This newest wave of feud speculation erupted in December 2024 when Gellar gave what many considered an awkward interview to Extra at the Dexter: Original Sin premiere. When asked about Hewitt’s potential return to the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise, Gellar abruptly responded, "I have nothing to do with that," before attempting to walk away from the reporter.⁴

The video went viral, racking up more than 5 million views on social media, with fans dissecting every facial expression and tone of voice for signs of secret animosity.

But Gellar quickly clarified her reaction on Instagram, explaining she was worried about violating a non-disclosure agreement regarding casting announcements. "Aspiring actors please note: this deer in the headlights reaction is perfect for when you are excited to see so many old friends in one project but have already stupidly forgotten what NDA means once this month," she wrote.⁵

Entertainment journalist Tommy DiDario, who interviewed Hewitt on his podcast around the same time, pushed back against the feud narrative. "I’m not sure it feels like a feud to me. Perhaps we shouldn’t continue to pin women against one another for no reason," DiDario wrote on X.⁶

Red carpet missed connections

The speculation reached a fever pitch at the July 2025 premiere of the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel in Los Angeles. Both actresses attended the event, but eagle-eyed fans noticed they didn’t appear in any photos together on the red carpet.

Social media immediately went into overdrive, with commenters demanding explanations for why the two weren’t photographed together. The absence of a reunion photo was treated like smoking gun evidence of deep-seated hostility.

Gellar once again found herself addressing the rumors directly in her Instagram comments. "For everyone asking – I never got to see @jenniferlovehewitt who is fantastic in the movie," she wrote. "I was inside with my kids when the big carpet happened. And unfortunately JLH didn’t come to the after party."⁷

She added, "If you have ever been to one of these it’s crazy. I sadly didn’t get pics with most of the cast. But that doesn’t change how amazing I think they all are. Unfortunately some things happen only in real life and not online."⁸

Anyone who’s ever attended a major Hollywood premiere knows the chaos Gellar described. These events are carefully choreographed media circuses where celebrities are shuttled from interview to interview with military precision. Gellar makes a brief cameo appearance as her character Helen Shivers in a dream sequence, despite the character being killed off in the original film.

Freddie Prinze Jr., who is married to Gellar in real life, also returns as Ray Bronson alongside Hewitt. The new film features a fresh cast including Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, and Jonah Hauer-King.

Speaking to People Magazine, Prinze Jr. said, "I know when we got together, they’re the best scenes that we’ve put on camera together, of any of the three movies. I’m really proud of the work that Love and I got to do on screen."¹⁰

The reality of Hollywood friendships

Hewitt’s revelation that she hasn’t spoken to Gellar in 28 years actually isn’t that unusual in Hollywood. The entertainment industry is notorious for creating intense working relationships that don’t necessarily translate into lasting personal friendships.
