Alex Trebek was one of the most beloved game show hosts in history. 

He became an institution during his time on Jeopardy!. 

And Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings faced this scary situation after taking over for Alex Trebek. 

Ken Jennings walked into a difficult situation after he became Jeopardy! host 

Alex Trebek became the face of Jeopardy! after he hosted the game show from 1984 until his death after a battle with pancreatic cancer in 2020. 

Fans knew they could count on seeing his familiar face for 37 seasons while contestants buzzed to answer trivia questions.

Stepping in to fill the shoes of an icon like Trebek was no easy task. 

Jeopardy! producer Mike Richards was initially given the tall task of replacing Trebek but he resigned after one week over a controversy about comments he made on a podcast. 

The game show then turned to former contestant Ken Jennings and actress Mayim Bialik to rotate as host. 

Jennings was one of the most successful and well-known contestants in Jeopardy! history after he reeled off 74 consecutive wins in 2004. 

He told Rolling Stone that the hardest part of taking over for Trebek in 2020 wasn’t hosting the game show but walking into a set that had a crew grieving from the death of their friend and colleague. 

“Everybody there was very emotional, and I had to be the one talking through it, even though I probably knew him least of all 100 people on set, crew and the staff,” Jennings recalled. “It was very scary. You’re aware that the audience does not want you there. They’re like me, they want the other guy, and I was missing him too. I’m like, ‘I don’t want to be here. I would give anything to not be here right now.’” 

Jennings earned the role of Jeopardy! host 

Jeopardy! showrunner Michael Davies told Rolling Stone that the game show planned to use several hosts to see who stood out. 

Jennings impressed them despite his initial fear about replacing Trebek. 

“I saw the look that the contestants would have when he’d walk out on the stage. Or his facility with the material,” Davies explained. “I remember at one point, somebody buzzed in and gave the wrong response, and they said, ‘Who is Gainsborough?’ And he said, ‘Oh, no, I’m sorry, it’s Gainsborough’s great rival,’ and named some other obscure artist. It was just a moment, [but] who on earth other than Ken Jennings could have that moment?”

Mayim Bialik was let go as a host in December 2023.

Trebek spoke to Jennings about the possibility of him becoming the host before he passed away in 2020.

“That was the first time I ever had a conversation with him that was [about] torch passing, and even that was kind of very unspoken,” Jennings said.

Jennings praised Jeopardy! for the show’s ability to unify people. 

“Jeopardy! is a weirdly unifying thing,” Jennings said. “Young people, old people, red states, blue states – it’s an institution that has this universal acceptance.”

Ken Jennings succeeded in filling the very big shoes left behind by Alex Trebek on one of the most popular game shows.
