Rural land near AI data center sites just jumped 79 percent in price this year.
Now a Republican senator says taxpayers are subsidizing the land grab too.
Josh Hawley just said the poverty tax break funding it all is a scam.
Opportunity Zones Were Built for the Poor Not for Silicon Valley
Congress created Opportunity Zones in 2017 for one reason.
Get private money into forgotten towns and struggling neighborhoods that Wall Street had written off for decades.
Josh Hawley says that promise got hijacked.
He's introducing legislation to strip AI data centers out of the program entirely.
Hawley told Fox News Digital that data centers have found a way to tap into money meant for struggling communities.
"They don't need any welfare. These people are rich," Hawley said. They can cover their own costs, he added.
Nearly half of all 8,746 Opportunity Zones sit in rural America.
That's exactly the terrain Big Tech has targeted for its server farms.
Fourteen percent of existing data centers already sit inside zones meant for the poor.
More than one in six data centers now planned or under construction are using the same loophole.
Read that twice.
A tax break Congress wrote for boarded-up Main Streets is now bankrolling some of the richest corporations on the planet.
The Bipartisan Backlash Big Tech Cannot Spin Away
Hawley isn't some lone voice yelling into the void.
This is happening as farmers across the country are watching bulldozers show up on land their families have worked for generations.
In Maysville, Kentucky, two women turned down $26 million for their farmland rather than hand it over for a data center.
Seventy-five projects worth $130 billion got delayed or blocked by furious locals in the first three months of this year alone.
One hundred forty two protests hit forty two states in a single day in July.
Voters oppose a data center in their own backyard by a two to one margin, and that number barely moves even after companies pitch them on the jobs.
New York issued an executive order against these facilities. Georgia and Pennsylvania have moratoriums on the books. That's not a coastal complaint. That's your neighbors, in red states and blue ones alike.
Regular Americans are watching their power bills spike while the companies causing it collect a tax break meant for people who actually need help.
Trump himself has already called the whole AI frenzy a "hoax."
Big Tech Bought Silence and It Worked for Years
This isn't the first time Washington promised to rein in Big Tech and then did nothing.
Three years ago Chuck Schumer held a parade of closed-door AI summits with Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg sitting at the table.
Nothing came of it.
Hawley's answer is blunt. Those same tech CEOs turned around and showered Schumer and Senate Democrats with campaign cash, and suddenly nobody in the room was in a hurry anymore.
Now the same companies want an antitrust exemption so they can write their own rules together, warning lawmakers that the sky is falling unless they're allowed to self-regulate.
Hawley isn't buying it, and neither should you.
That's not regulation. That's the fox drafting the henhouse rules.
What Actually Fires People Up About This
This should make every taxpayer furious.
Hold the investment ten years and every dollar of profit is tax free, forever.
Data centers are built to run for thirty years. The tax break was practically written for them.
That's not an accident. That's a loophole for lawyers rich companies can afford, and nobody else.
Your neighbor's electric bill just jumped because a server farm moved in down the road.
He gets nothing. No tax break. No relief. Just a higher bill and a farm that isn't a farm anymore.
Hawley's bill won't fix the water fights or the grid strain. Nobody's pretending it will.
But it does one thing that matters right now.
It tells Big Tech the free ride is over, and it forces every Republican who's been sitting on the fence to finally pick a side.
