Kate's outdoor obsession defied palace expectations
Kate Middleton doesn't act like most people expect royals to behave.
The Princess of Wales beat cancer and went into remission this past January.¹
Most royals would retreat to a cushy life of indoor comforts and tea parties after winning that kind of fight.
Not Kate.
She's been spotted rock climbing, abseiling down cliffs in Wales, and paddleboarding near her Norfolk home at every opportunity.²
Royal expert Helena Chard explained that Kate has picked up meditation under photographer Chris Levine's guidance because she believes "the practice can be just as beneficial as medication."³
Kate told those close to her that "meditation gives her balance and peace and is a winner when it comes to overcoming anxiety."⁴
The princess spent her recovery time foraging for mushrooms in the woods with her three children, teaching them to catch tadpoles, and baking outdoors — the kind of stuff that gets you muddy and mosquito-bitten.⁵
And she's turned what could've been a weakness after her health scare into her biggest strength with British voters.
The polls tell a brutal story for the rest of the royals
Kate sits as either the first or second most popular royal in Britain depending on which poll you check.
A YouGov survey from May 2025 showed Kate with 72% approval, just behind Prince William's 75%.⁶
But here's what matters more: only 13% of Britons have a negative view of Kate Middleton.⁷
That's lower than Prince William's 15% negative rating.⁸
A Daily Mirror poll revealed that 78% of Britons believe the royal family wouldn't be as relevant without Kate's influence.⁹
Royal expert Hilary Fordwich called Kate's approach a "rural renaissance" because her "regular normal Britishness of her treasuring traditions rooted in the wholesomeness of the countryside render her even more appealing to middle-class families."¹⁰
Translation: Kate's not putting on airs like the stuffy old guard royals who act like they're too good to get their hands dirty.
She's out there living like a normal British mum who wants her kids playing outside instead of staring at screens all day.
Royal commentator Amanda Matta pointed out that Kate recently wrote an essay warning about the "epidemic of disconnection" caused by too much screen time.¹¹
"She's the mom who would rather see her kids in muddy clothes than get too much screen time," Matta explained.¹²
That authenticity connects with working-class and middle-class voters who remember when British childhood meant building forts in the woods, not watching TikTok videos.
Prince William calls Kate's wildest hobby "crazy"
Kate's taken her outdoor obsession to what Prince William considers an extreme level.
The future queen loves swimming in freezing cold streams and pools — in the dark — even when it's raining.¹³
"Kate thinks this is totally invigorating," royal expert Ian Pelham Turner revealed.¹⁴
Prince William reportedly thinks his wife is "amusing and slightly bonkers as she searches for cold water, even in rainy darkness."¹⁵
Royal expert Helena Chard confirmed that William believes Kate's cold-water swimming habit gives her "a real mood boost" but he can't wrap his head around why anyone would voluntarily jump into freezing water in pitch darkness during a rainstorm.¹⁶
Kate's also taken up weightlifting "to strengthen her body core" as she continues recovering from her cancer battle.¹⁷
The princess told Chief Scout Dwayne Fields during a trip to England's Lake District that "during my recovery, I spent a lot of time in the outdoors, because that's where I felt at peace."¹⁸
Former Queen Elizabeth II spokesperson Ailsa Anderson explained that Kate "gets so much sustenance in nature, and she's lucky to have homes in some of the most beautiful parts of Britain: in Norfolk and on the Windsor estate."¹⁹
Kate's outdoor habits stand in stark contrast to the polished, controlled image other royals carefully cultivate.
She'd rather be catching frogs with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis than attending another stuffy palace dinner.
That's exactly why British voters love her — she reminds them of what made Britain great before everyone got soft and obsessed with looking perfect for Instagram.
