KFC made one surprising comeback that’s got fast food fans racing to the drive-thru

The fast food value wars just kicked into high gear with an unexpected move.

KFC brought back a beloved menu deal that disappeared six years ago.

And KFC made one surprising comeback that’s got fast food fans racing to the drive-thru.

KFC brings back Fill Ups after six years to battle inflation

The chicken chain announced it’s bringing back its iconic Fill Ups meal deal for the first time since 2019, offering four complete meals for just $7 each.

The promotion is part of a collaboration with "F1: The Movie." The deal offers customers a choice of four full meals for just $7 each.

"It’s a really big deal that we’re bringing back our Fill Ups—with four varieties of finger lickin’ good meals that genuinely fill you up, for only $7," said Catherine Tan-Gillespie, president, KFC US.

The timing couldn’t be better for cash-strapped Americans who have watched fast food prices soar.

Most restaurants raised prices by 60% on average during the time period, and five — McDonald’s, Popeyes, Taco Bell, Chipotle, and Jimmy John’s — did so at more than double the actual inflation rate.

KFC originally launched Fill Ups in 2009 as the $5 Fill Up Box before expanding into family meal options.

The $7 price point reflects inflation but still delivers serious value in today’s market.

Each Fill Up comes packed with a main item, mashed potatoes and gravy, a buttery biscuit, two pie poppers, and a medium drink.

Four ways to fill up without breaking the bank

The returning Fill Ups lineup gives customers plenty of options to satisfy their cravings.

3-Piece Tenders Fill Up: Three Original Recipe Tenders paired with your choice of dipping sauce, plus creamy mashed potatoes and gravy, a buttery biscuit, two pie poppers, and a medium drink.

The one-piece and two-piece fried chicken Fill Ups offer Original Recipe or Extra Crispy options with the same sides and drink.

The Famous Bowl Fill Up rounds out the menu with KFC’s signature bowl plus pie poppers and a drink.

Each box packs in a full meal—and then some—for just $7. And nowadays, that’s not easy to do.

KFC is also jumping on the viral "dirty soda" trend with a new Mountain Dew Sweet Lightning Peaches & Cream flavor launching June 9.

The beverage can be customized with a vanilla cream swirl to appeal to Gen Z and Millennial customers.

The fast food value wars heat up as traffic plummets

KFC’s Fill Ups return comes as the entire industry battles to win back customers turned off by sky-high prices.

Nearly two-thirds (62%) of Americans report eating fast food less often due to higher prices, while 78% now consider fast food a luxury due to its expense, according to a LendingTree survey.

"How low can you go" seems to be the battle cry of fast-food chains this summer, as they compete to bring inflation-weary diners into their restaurants.

McDonald’s kicked off the value war with its $5 meal deal, while Wendy’s countered with its "2 for $7" offer.

McDonald’s reported a 3.6 percent decline in US same-store sales in the first quarter of 2025. This drop marks the company’s sharpest quarterly decline since the pandemic.

The traffic decline isn’t limited to McDonald’s either.

Starbucks also saw a 1 percent decline in US comparable store sales, extending a five-quarter streak of traffic declines.

Even premium chains like Chipotle are feeling the pinch as customers become more selective about dining out.

KFC teams up with Brad Pitt’s F1 blockbuster

The Fill Ups comeback gets extra horsepower from KFC’s partnership with the highly anticipated summer blockbuster "F1 The Movie."

The film stars Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Javier Bardem. F1 is scheduled to be theatrically released by Warner Bros. Pictures on June 25, 2025, internationally, and in the United States and Canada on June 27, 2025.

In June 2022, Apple acquired distribution rights in a package deal worth $130–140 million before above-the-line compensation.

"It’s box meals meets box office in our Kentucky Fried Collab with ‘F1 The Movie,’ so you can turn hunger for chicken into a victory lap this summer."

The movie follows Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a veteran Formula One driver who comes out of retirement to mentor a rookie prodigy.

Lewis Hamilton has been opening up on the "incredible learning process" involved, his experiences of working with Brad Pitt, and why he believes it will be the "most authentic racing movie that’s ever been made"

KFC is the exclusive quick-service restaurant partner for the film, making its drive-thrus "the most desired pit stop of summer."

The value wars show no signs of slowing down

Industry experts predict the intense competition for budget-conscious customers will continue well into 2025.

"It’s going to be at least the first six months of 2025, when we’re going to be seeing elevated promotions, but it’s likely going to be the entire 2025," said Danilo Gargiulo, investment research firm Bernstein’s senior analyst specializing in restaurants.

The value war didn’t happen overnight.

Consumer habits shifted in the years coming out of COVID-19 lockdowns, when government supports and a lack of opportunities to go out boosted savings. When health measures were lifted, people spent the cash they were sitting on, but as prices, interest rates and inflation spiked, consumers pulled back.

Now chains are scrambling to find the sweet spot between profitability and affordability.

As restaurants across the board face dwindling traffic, the chicken chain is leaning on aggressive discounting to draw customers.

For customers, the ongoing value wars mean more choices and better deals as chains fight for their business.

KFC’s Fill Ups return represents a smart move to recapture market share while giving fans exactly what they’ve been asking for.

The combination of nostalgic menu items, Hollywood star power, and unbeatable value could make KFC the winner in this summer’s fast food showdown.
