Kroger Dropped One Perfect Summer Guide That Has Food Lovers Racing to the Deli

Aug 4, 2025

America’s favorite grocery chain just rolled out something that’ll change how you think about lunch forever.

The timing couldn’t be better – right as families are scrambling for quick summer meal ideas and fighting rising food costs.

And Kroger dropped one perfect summer guide that has food lovers racing to the deli.

America’s grocer tackles the sandwich challenge

Kroger released its comprehensive “Perfect Sandwich-Making Guide” on Monday, giving American families a roadmap to creating restaurant-quality sandwiches at home for a fraction of the cost.¹

The Cincinnati-based grocery giant – which operates more than 2,000 stores nationwide – knows exactly what working families need right now.

“Every meal is an opportunity for creativity and enjoyment,” said Josh Harpole, vice president of Deli and Bakery at Kroger. “Whether your family loves classic combinations or adventurous flavors, Kroger’s Private Selection® deli meats provide fresh high-quality ingredients, offering affordable indulgence to everyone.”²

The guide breaks down sandwich construction into five key components that any home cook can master.

Starting with the base, Kroger showcases its bakery’s fresh options including whole grain, sourdough, and ciabatta breads, plus specialty items like their Private Selection® Croissant Loaf.³

They’re not just pushing bread though.

The grocer is highlighting Hawaiian dinner rolls for sliders and flour tortillas for wraps, recognizing that families want variety and portability.

Follow the money on this timing

This sandwich guide didn’t just randomly appear in July.

Americans are dealing with inflation fatigue while the global sandwich market is experiencing explosive growth – projected to reach $19.52 billion by 2032 with a 5.72% compound annual growth rate.⁴

Kroger’s executives looked at the numbers and saw an opening, especially as prepared foods and grab-and-go options are driving significant growth in the deli sector, with over half of deli sales now attributed to these categories, up 5.6% in dollars.⁵

The guide features Kroger’s Private Selection® brand prominently, including Mesquite Smoked Deli Turkey Breast, Wildflower Honey Deli Ham, and Fat Free Hot Honey Chicken Breast.

They’re even catering to dietary restrictions with Simple Truth’s Plant-Based Salt & Pepper Turkey Style Deli Slices.

Kroger is also going beyond just ingredients and offering complete meal solutions.

Their Grab & Go Italian Trio Sandwich Combo and American Sandwich Combo provide everything families need for quick meals, while their specialty recipes range from Better-for-You Chickpea Turkey combinations to keto-friendly Italian Sub Roll-Ups.

Walmart’s breathing down their necks

This sandwich guide represents Kroger throwing punches in an increasingly brutal grocery fight.

With Walmart holding 23.6% of grocery market share and Kroger commanding just over 10%, the company needs wins beyond just matching prices.⁶

Traditional supermarkets are getting hammered from all sides – Walmart and Amazon are obvious threats, but specialty chains, dollar stores, and even restaurants are stealing customers.⁷

Kroger’s deli focus is smart business.

Research shows that over half of grocery retail executives consider fresh food departments – especially produce, deli, and meat – their most important battlegrounds for the next three years.⁸

The chain is betting that families want convenience without sacrificing quality, and they’re positioning their Private Selection® brand as the premium-but-affordable solution.

Their guide even includes finishing touches like Private Selection Zesty Italian Salad Dressing and Everything Seasoned Hummus, creating a complete ecosystem around sandwich-making.

Restaurant prices are getting ridiculous

Smart families are already catching on to what this guide really represents – a way to beat restaurant prices while keeping everyone happy.

With the sandwich market experiencing an 18% rise in global launches over the past five years and Americans increasingly demanding convenience, Kroger is positioned to capture more wallet share.⁹

The grocer is offering weekly specials on deli meats through their app, sweetening the deal for budget-conscious shoppers.

Compare that to restaurant sandwich prices – which often run $12-15 for a decent sub – and Kroger’s strategy starts looking brilliant.

Families can create multiple gourmet sandwiches for the price of one restaurant meal, all while controlling ingredients and portion sizes.

The guide covers everything from classic BLTs to adventurous fusion combinations, ensuring there’s something for every palate and dietary need.

Kroger is betting that Americans want to reclaim their kitchens without spending hours cooking – and based on current market trends, they’re probably right.
