Kayce and Monica Dutton rode off into the sunset together at the end of Yellowstone – and 20 million Americans cheered.
That was 2024.
Now it's 2026, and Monica is dead.
Why Luke Grimes Called Kelsey Asbille Before Marshals Premiered
Before Luke Grimes agreed to reprise his role as Kayce Dutton in Marshals, CBS's new Yellowstone spinoff, he had to make a phone call he didn't want to make.
Kelsey Asbille – his on-screen wife, his real-life best friend – needed to hear it from him before she saw it on TV.
"I worked up the courage to call," Grimes told TV Insider. "I didn't know how she was going to feel about it."
He didn't sugarcoat it. Monica Dutton was dead. Cancer. Off-screen. Gone before the first episode even started.
"I was heartbroken for myself and for her," Grimes said. "It felt like, 'I don't even know what that would look like doing it without her, what that would feel like.'"
The two had spent nearly a decade building one of television's most authentic couples. Not just on screen – behind the scenes too.
"There's so much trust and comfort there," Asbille once said. "It's a wonderful partnership."
Grimes made the call anyway. Because real friendship doesn't hide behind a press release.
"In true Kelsey fashion, she handled it like a pro and totally understood," he said. "She's going to do just fine. She is so talented, gorgeous, and awesome. She's going to work. That's not an issue."
What Happened to Monica Dutton in Marshals
Showrunner Spencer Hudnut – not Taylor Sheridan, who serves only as executive producer – had a specific reason for writing Monica out.
After Kayce and Monica rode off to their happy ending in Yellowstone, the creative team faced one problem: how do you put a man who found peace back on a battlefield?
Monica's death was the answer – and it wasn't arbitrary.
"Reservations have a high rate of cancer because of all the toxins that have been dumped on them," Hudnut explained. "We wanted to make her death about a bigger issue. We wanted to be very respectful of that character."
Whether you call that respectful storytelling or convenient writing depends on how much you loved Monica Dutton.
Kayce Dutton in Marshals Without Monica
The premiere doesn't ease you in gently.
Kayce wakes up alone – a dream about Monica still echoing – and spends the opening act learning how to be a single father. He burns breakfast. He tells his teenage son Tate, "I know your mom was better at all of this."
An old Navy SEAL buddy named Pete Calvin – played by Logan Marshall-Green – eventually pulls him into an elite U.S. Marshals unit protecting Montana from organized crime.
Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty return as Thomas Rainwater and Mo, which will matter to every Yellowstone fan still mourning the original.
Critics haven't been kind. Marshals is sitting at 44% on Rotten Tomatoes after nine reviews. The Hollywood Reporter called it too dependent on Yellowstone lore to stand alone.
Audiences don't care.
The show debuted number two in the United States on Paramount+ the morning after its CBS premiere and hit number five globally. CBS opened the writers' room for a potential second season before the show even aired.
This is what Yellowstone does. Critics pan it. Viewers watch it anyway.
The Yellowstone Friendship Nobody Is Talking About
The entertainment press is focused on Monica's death and what it means for the show.
The real story is simpler.
If you watched Yellowstone from the beginning, you know Monica wasn't just a supporting character. She was the conscience of the whole series – the one person who kept asking whether the Dutton empire was worth what it cost. Losing her doesn't just shake up Kayce's story. It takes something out of the show that no new character can replace.
Grimes knows that. It's why the phone call mattered.
He didn't have to make it. He could have let Kelsey Asbille find out the way everyone else did – trailer drops, leaked casting sheets, the Hollywood rumor mill.
He didn't. He picked up the phone, admitted he didn't know how she'd react, and made a call that cost him something.
That's the kind of thing Kayce Dutton would do.
Turns out it's also the kind of thing Luke Grimes does.
