McDonald’s let the cat out of the bag on this legendary fan favorite returning

Jul 9, 2024

McDonald’s has created some of the most iconic sandwiches in fast food.

But one limited-time release has built a massive cult following.

And McDonald’s let the cat out of the bag on this legendary fan favorite returning.

The McRib is returning later this year

The McRib is the longest-running limited-time menu item at McDonald’s.

Fans eagerly await the return of the cult favorite.

The sandwich features a boneless pork patty smothered in a sweet and tangy BBQ sauce topped with onions and pickles on a homestyle bun.

McDonald’s has come under fire for its rising prices since the inflation crisis broke out under President Joe Biden.

The fast food chain released its $5 Meal Deal to lure back inflation-weary customers.

Customers can pick from a McDouble or McChicken, small fries, four chicken McNuggets, and a small drink for $5.

McDonald’s U.S. President Joe Erlinger let it slip in an interview on the Today show promoting the new Meal Deal that the McRib was returning.

Today weatherman Al Roker asked about the McRib and said that the beloved sandwich should be sold year-round.

“It’s coming later this year. The McRib will be back,” Erlinger said.

“That’s what I’m talking about,” Roker exclaimed.

Roker is one of the many McRib fanatics.

McRib could give McDonald’s a boost in sales

The McRib has developed a cult-like following over the years and was even parodied in a 2003 episode of The Simpsons as the Ribwich from Krusty Burger.

Homer Simpson and fans of the Ribwich follow the release of the sandwich around the country in a parody of Deadheads – fans of band, The Grateful Dead.

A McRib locator was launched to help fans identify which McDonald’s locations were carrying the sandwich.

It was first released in 1981 as a menu item but it was removed in 1985 after disappointing sales.

The McRib made its triumphant return in 1989 where it’s been rotating on and off the menu ever since.

Since then, the McRib has undergone multiple farewell tours only to return again to the delight of its legion of fans.

The sandwich went on its fourth farewell tour in 2022 only to return to menus nationwide in November 2023.

Now the return of the McRib this year could be a part of a strategy to boost sales at McDonald’s along with the $5 Meal Deal.

Global Data managing director Neil Saunders told the Daily Mail that the sandwich’s return could boost foot traffic.

“Bringing the McRib back for a limited time will spur some interest and foot traffic for McDonald’s at a time when performance is flagging,” Saunders said.

But that jolt could only be short-lived.

“The uplift is usually only temporary, so the chain still has work to do on areas like pricing if it wants to secure a better performance,” Saunders added.

McDonald’s is also returning another fan favorite, bagels, to its breakfast menus nationwide in a bid to boost sales.

The return of the McRib will be welcome news to fans of the beloved BBQ pork sandwich.
