McDonald’s has been serving up burgers and fries for decades.

But the fast food giant just pulled something out of their vault that nobody expected.

And McDonald’s made one shocking announcement that sent fans racing to remember their childhood.

McDonald’s brings back McDonaldland characters after more than 20 years

For the first time in over two decades, McDonald’s is officially bringing back the beloved McDonaldland characters that defined childhoods across America.

Starting Tuesday, Ronald McDonald, Grimace, Birdie, Hamburglar, Mayor McCheese and the Fry Friends are stepping out of retirement for the all-new McDonaldland Meal.

The fast food chain hasn’t featured these iconic characters prominently since the early 2000s.

"Over the past few years we’ve seen how fans flock to our characters, everyone from Grimace to the Hamburglar. But many, especially the new generation, don’t know that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There’s an entire magical world of McDonaldland filled with characters, places and lore," said Jennifer "JJ" Healan, McDonald’s VP, U.S. Marketing, Brand, Content & Culture.¹

McDonald’s realized an entire generation doesn’t know the full story behind these characters.

"And so, for the first time in decades we are taking fans on a trip to McDonaldland with an immersive experience that taps into the past to create the future. It’s a chance for us to give fans a new, modern way to experience this magical world," Healan added.¹

The centerpiece is the limited-edition Mt. McDonaldland Shake – inspired by the fictional volcano that was a major landmark in the original McDonaldland world.

The shake contains a mystery flavor blend that McDonald’s is keeping under wraps, leaving customers to figure out what they’re tasting.

The McDonaldland universe returns with collectibles and merchandise

The McDonaldland brand launched in 1971, creating a magical world where characters lived among fantastical elements like Apple Pie Trees and Hamburger Patches.

McDonald’s featured these characters heavily in advertising, games and entertainment for more than two decades before scaling back their prominence.

The characters built a massive following among kids and families who grew up watching their adventures.

The new McDonaldland Meal includes your choice of a Quarter Pounder with Cheese or 10-piece Chicken McNuggets along with fries and a collectible souvenir.

McDonald’s is offering six different collectible tins that include postcards, stickers and other memorabilia, with each tin celebrating a different character from the McDonaldland cast.

The fast food giant is also partnering with clothing brand Pacsun starting August 12 for limited-edition merchandise featuring sweat sets and graphic tees.

Away luggage is jumping on the McDonaldland bandwagon too, offering complimentary luggage tags and bag charms with purchases at Away retail locations starting August 18.

McDonald’s promises customers can carry a piece of McDonaldland magic wherever they go with these new merchandise partnerships.

The campaign includes a dedicated website at McDonaldland.com where fans can learn more about the characters and their world.

McDonald’s is promoting the experience across all their social media platforms including Instagram, TikTok, X and Facebook.

The company is betting that nostalgia will drive customers through their doors during the competitive summer season.

McDonald’s banks on nostalgia to drive sales in competitive market

The return of McDonaldland characters represents McDonald’s biggest character-driven campaign in decades.

McDonald’s has been struggling with declining customer visits as inflation-weary consumers eat out less frequently.

Fast food chains across the country are fighting for fewer customers as people cook at home more often to save money.

The McDonaldland campaign is designed to create buzz and drive traffic during the competitive summer season when families are more likely to eat out.

McDonald’s is hoping that parents who grew up with these characters will introduce them to their own children.

"It’s a chance for us to give fans a new, modern way to experience this magical world," Healan said.¹

The campaign taps into the powerful force of nostalgia marketing that has worked for other brands bringing back beloved characters and products from the past.

McDonald’s tested the waters with Grimace’s birthday campaign in 2023, which became a viral sensation on social media.

The purple character’s birthday meal and shake created massive buzz online and drove significant traffic to McDonald’s restaurants.

Now McDonald’s is expanding that success to include the entire McDonaldland cast of characters.

The limited-time nature of the promotion is designed to create urgency and encourage multiple visits as customers try to collect all six collectible tins.

McDonald’s operates approximately 13,500 restaurants in the United States with 95% owned and operated by independent franchisees.

The McDonaldland campaign shows that sometimes the best way forward is to look backward to what made people fall in love with your brand in the first place.
