Few sports are more historic than NASCAR. 

So when you find a piece of NASCAR history that everyone forgot about, you know you have something truly special. 

And NASCAR fans were left speechless after one piece of racing history was rediscovered after it went missing for decades. 

Sports helped build America

America would be nothing without its sports. 

From baseball to football to racing, generations of Americans have been blessed with sports to take them away from the daily grind and to focus on something less intrusive on their life. 

And many sporting events have played a huge part in the development of American culture and history. 

For instance, racial integration in America was partly possible from the hard work and sacrifice from players like Jackie Robinson who showed that an African American could play just as well as any white could on the diamond. 

And then you have the epicenter of American patriotism of the 1980s that really started with the “Miracle on Ice” when a group of unknown American hockey players went on to beat the U.S.S.R,  the best team in the world at that time. 

Of course, the Broad Street Bullies really beat up on the commies first.

But when you look back at sports with its rich history of developing our culture, no sport has impacted the south quite like NASCAR. 

NASCAR provided the South with a sport to rally around in the 1970s and 1980s while the rest of America looked down upon the region. 

And thankfully fans of NASCAR were blessed with some of the most recognizable names in sports with the likes of Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty, and more entertaining the masses as they showed the world just how good they were on the track. 

These big names in the sport have led to some avid collectors of NASCAR’s historic past. 

And when these collectors find something unique related to the racing league, fans can’t get enough as they look back on the good old days of NASCAR. 

A relic of NASCAR’s past

Well if there was ever a unique NASCAR item that virtually no one has seen before, it’s this one. 

Avid collector Ken Thorson noticed an ad online for the sale of a miniature 1971 Dodge Charger according to a recent report on the once-in-a-lifetime find published by Hemmings.com. 

As Thorson explained, “A friend of mine forwarded a listing on a ‘71 Charger 3/8ths scale wind tunnel model car. It had one picture and very little info on the car, but I was intrigued to say the least.”

The unique item stumped even the best collectors of car and racing memorabilia.

According to Ken, the owner of the mini car – a man named Phil – “told me he has been in possession of the 3/8th scale car for thirty years. His wife worked at the University of Michigan back then, and one day they were cleaning up and getting rid of things. They found the ’71 Charger test car sitting in storage, and they were going to toss it in the dumpster. Phil’s wife intervened and asked if she could have it for her husband, who was heavily involved in the vintage car hobby. They agreed and so Phil went and picked it up at the University and then put it in his barn. It stayed there untouched for the next three decades.” 

Ken then quickly made a deal on the car and drove 600 miles to get the tiny car. 

He remembers when he first saw the car that “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was amazing, especially the craftsmanship and the overall condition of the car.”

But, even though the car looks cool, the real question is what is this tiny car?

Well Ken did his research and found out that it was a one of a kind wind tunnel car of NASCAR’s 1971 Charger.

Ken provide that, “After some research I found out that this fiberglass ’71 Charger was one of three models built for the G-series NASCAR tests, the other two being a ’69 Daytona, which resides in a collection in California, and a ’71 Road Runner, owned by Petty Enterprises in the Carolinas.”
