The Oak Ridge Boys have faced more heartbreak than any legendary group should have to endure.
First they lost beloved member Joe Bonsall to ALS complications in July.
And now Oak Ridge Boys bass singer Richard Sterban just revealed he’s fighting for his life against pancreatic cancer.
The voice behind "Elvira" is battling pancreatic cancer
Richard Sterban dropped the bombshell news that sent shockwaves through the country music world.
"In March of this year, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer," the Country Music Hall of Famer announced in a statement that left fans reeling.¹
For anyone who’s ever sung along to "Elvira" – and let’s be honest, that’s pretty much everyone who loves country music – Sterban’s voice is instantly recognizable.
He’s the one delivering those iconic bass parts that made the song a classic.
But right now, that legendary voice is silenced while he fights the battle of his life.
Sterban has been a cornerstone of the Oak Ridge Boys since 1972, helping define their sound for more than five decades.
The diagnosis explains why he’s been noticeably absent from the road since mid-May, with Aaron McCune and Tim Duncan stepping in to fill his massive shoes.
"But I am under the care of the best cancer doctors in the country and, with the help of the Good Lord above, I believe I will be able to get through this," Sterban said with the kind of faith that’s sustained him through decades in the music business.²
The Oak Ridge Boys can’t catch a break
This latest blow comes during what might be the most devastating period in the group’s legendary history.
The Oak Ridge Boys have been absolutely pummeled by tragedy over the past year and a half.
Joe Bonsall, another cornerstone of the group, lost his battle with ALS on July 9, 2024, at just 76 years old.
Before that, William Lee Golden’s son Rusty passed away on July 1, 2024.
And if that wasn’t enough heartbreak, Duane Allen lost his wife of nearly 55 years, Norah Lee Allen, on the same Easter weekend that Sterban’s wife lost her father.
Allen revealed to Taste of Country that the group lost 16 people who were either family members, close friends, or part of their team around that same devastating time period.
You’d think that kind of relentless tragedy would break most groups.
But these guys aren’t most groups.
A legendary group refuses to quit
Despite facing more loss than most people could handle, the Oak Ridge Boys aren’t backing down.
They announced their "American Made: Farewell Tour" back in September 2023, initially planning to wrap things up by December 2024.
But instead of calling it quits, they added more dates for 2025 and are already planning shows into 2026.
Allen, who just started his 60th year with the group, explained why they’re not ready to hang up their microphones.
"Right now, I don’t have any end date in sight," Allen told Taste of Country back in June.³
"I just started my 60th year with the Oak Ridge Boys, and I have no one to come home to."
"Singing and the fans on the road, they’re all my family now," he continued. "And this group of guys I work with, we all love each other, and we love what we do."
That dedication to their craft and their fans shows exactly why the Oak Ridge Boys have remained relevant for generations.
They understand that their music means something to people – especially to the folks who grew up when country music still sounded like country music.
Faith sustaining them through the storm
What’s remarkable about Sterban’s announcement isn’t just his determination to beat cancer.
It’s the way he’s handling this fight with the same grace and faith that’s defined his entire career.
"I want to thank everyone, especially the fans, for your concern, and I would appreciate your continued prayers," Sterban said in his statement.⁴
"Most days I’m feeling very good, and I hope to be back out on the road in several months."
For a generation that grew up with the Oak Ridge Boys’ music playing at family gatherings, church functions, and county fairs, Sterban isn’t just a performer.
He’s part of the soundtrack of their lives.
Allen captured this perfectly when he talked about the group’s future: "The fact that God has blessed us for so many years … when He gets His mind made up that we’ve done enough, He will tell us, ‘It is enough. Go on home.’"⁵
"We’ll keep singing as long as God keeps blessing our career."
That kind of faith-based approach to life and career used to be common in country music.
Now it’s increasingly rare – which makes the Oak Ridge Boys even more precious.
Sterban’s last public appearance with the group was at the Academy of Country Music Awards in May, just months after his diagnosis.
The fact that he was still performing while dealing with this devastating news shows the kind of professional dedication that built the Oak Ridge Boys’ legendary status.
Look, pancreatic cancer is about as serious as cancer gets.
But if anyone can beat the odds through sheer determination, faith, and the prayers of millions of fans, it’s Richard Sterban.
The man who gave us those unforgettable bass lines on "Elvira" deserves all the prayers and support we can give him.
And knowing the kind of people who love Oak Ridge Boys music, he’s going to get exactly that.
