A little-known fermented drink is about to get its moment in the spotlight.
This ancient superfood has been quietly gaining steam across the country.
And one food company just made an announcement that could transform America’s health habits.
Lifeway Foods declared June 18 National Kefir Day in landmark move
Lifeway Foods, Inc. (NASDAQ: LWAY) ("Lifeway" or "the Company"), a leading U.S. supplier of kefir and fermented probiotic products to support the microbiome, proudly announces the launch of National Kefir Day, to be celebrated annually on June 18.
This isn’t just another marketing stunt from a food company desperate for attention.
The official proclamation will take place in Chicago, where Lifeway was founded nearly four decades ago, with an impressive lineup of government officials, medical professionals, and nutrition experts.
The event will feature remarks from key leaders in government, medicine and nutrition, including: Julie Smolyansky, President and CEO of Lifeway Foods and UIC graduate, Illinois State Senator Willie Preston, Cook County Commissioner Josina Morita, Allyson Hansen, Executive Director of the Illinois Medical District, Dr. Shikha Jain, oncologist and faculty member at University of Illinois Cancer Center.
The woman behind the kefir revolution has an incredible story
Julie Smolyansky’s journey is nothing short of remarkable.
She is the CEO of Illinois-based dairy company Lifeway Foods. Smolyansky was born in Kyiv, Ukraine (then Ukrainian SSR), to Jewish parents Ludmila and Michael Smolyansky. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was one.
When tragedy struck and her father died of a heart attack in 2002, Julie was thrust into leadership at just 27 years old.
After he died of a heart attack in 2002, Julie, aged 27, became the youngest female CEO of a publicly traded firm.
What she did next stunned the business world.
She, along with her brother as CFO, transformed the company into a multinational firm, growing its revenue from $12 million to $130 million in 2015.
The company’s success story isn’t slowing down either.
"We’re thrilled to begin 2025 with continued topline momentum, delivering our 22nd consecutive quarter of year-over-year net sales growth," commented Julie Smolyansky, President and Chief Executive Officer of Lifeway Foods.
Kefir packs a nutritional punch that puts other health foods to shame
This isn’t your typical health food fad that promises the world and delivers nothing.
Kefir grains contain up to 61 strains of bacteria and yeasts, making them a very rich and diverse probiotic source, though this diversity may vary.
Compare that to regular yogurt, which typically contains just a handful of probiotic strains.
Kefir contains about three times more probiotics than yogurt, and offers "a more diverse microbial profile with up to 60 unique species of probiotics," said Stephani Johnson, RDN, DCN, adjunct professor in the department of clinical and preventive nutrition services at the Rutgers School of Health Professions.
The health benefits backed by scientific research are impressive.
Probiotics such as kefir can help restore the balance of friendly bacteria in your gut. This is why they are highly effective at treating many forms of diarrhea. What’s more, ample evidence suggests that probiotics and probiotic foods can alleviate many digestive concerns.
Recent studies show kefir outperforming other popular health products.
A daily serving of traditional dairy kefir benefits the gut microbiome more than a probiotic-fortified yoghurt drink or an inulin-rich diet, according to a recent clinical study.
The celebration includes some wild stunts that will grab America’s attention
Lifeway isn’t holding back with their National Kefir Day festivities.
As part of the celebration, free Lifeway Kefir samples will be distributed on Wednesday, June 18 at iconic locations in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and Miami.
But here’s where things get interesting.
To keep the festivities going, Lifeway will sponsor a drone show over Lake Michigan on the evening of June 20th to honor Chicago as the "Kefir Capital of the World," and delight audiences with images from the Company and city’s history.
The most eye-catching promotion might be their tattoo challenge.
As part of the National Kefir Day festivities, the company is launching a tattoo challenge, rewarding fans who show their lifelong love for Lifeway with a year of free kefir. Choose a Lifeway-inspired tattoo, whether it’s your favorite Lifeway product, the brand logo, or a creative design related to Lifeway and gut health, then share a photo or video of your tattoo on Instagram or TikTok, tag @lifewaykefir, and use the hashtag #LifewayLovesYourGuts.
Timing couldn’t be better as Americans discover gut health
The announcement comes at a perfect moment when Americans are becoming obsessed with gut health and natural wellness solutions.
"Viral social posts on TikTok and Instagram about kefir related to anti-bloating hacks and skin health are creating robust demand for Lifeway’s key product line."
The company has been expanding rapidly to meet growing demand.
The Company also announced it has surpassed $37.6 million in net sales for the first two months of the second quarter, from April 1, 2025 through May 31, 2025, representing a 10.7% increase from the comparable period in the prior year.
Major retailers are taking notice and adding kefir products to their shelves nationwide.
HEB: Launching in June, Lifeway’s Farmer Cheese will be available in HEB stores across Texas, delivering a high protein, cultured dairy option. Hy-Vee: Four Whole Milk Kefir items and Farmer Cheese are now available in 180 Hy-Vee locations, enhancing Lifeway’s Midwest reach.
This could mark the beginning of America’s fermented food revolution
Smolyansky understands the bigger picture here.
"National Kefir Day is more than just a date, it’s a movement," said Julie Smolyansky, President and CEO of Lifeway Foods. "For nearly four decades, Lifeway has been at the forefront of bringing kefir to American homes."
She’s connecting this celebration to her family’s immigrant story and the American dream.
"My father started making kefir in our basement, driven by the belief that food can heal. What began as a small family dream has blossomed into a global gut health phenomenon."
The health implications could be massive for Americans who have been struggling with chronic diseases.
Peptides, bioactive compounds and strains occurring in kefir, can modulate gut microbiota composition, low-grade inflammation and intestinal permeability, which consequently may generate health benefits. Kefir can also impact on the regulation of organism homeostasis, with a direct effect on the gut-brain axis, being a possible strategy for the prevention of metabolic diseases.
National Kefir Day might seem like a simple food celebration, but it represents something much bigger.
After decades of Americans reaching for processed foods and artificial solutions, we’re finally seeing a return to traditional, naturally fermented foods that our ancestors knew were good for us.
This Ukrainian immigrant family turned their basement operation into a movement that could reshape how Americans think about their health.
