Tuesday, August 5, millions of Americans across all 50 states will step outside their front doors for National Night Out, the country’s largest community-building event that brings neighbors and police officers together in a celebration that’s about as far from the mainstream media’s anti-cop narrative as you can get.¹

What started in 1984 with 2.5 million neighbors across 400 communities has exploded to 38 million residents in 16,000 communities nationwide.² You won’t find this story on the evening news because it doesn’t fit their anti-police narrative. This grassroots movement proves Americans still believe in community over chaos.

Movement Aims to Bring Back Real Community

Matt Peskin had a simple idea back in 1984 when he was volunteering for a community watch program in the Philadelphia suburbs. He noticed hundreds of neighborhood groups existed across the country with no way to connect and support each other.³

His solution worked better than anyone imagined. National Night Out started with neighbors turning on their porch lights and sitting in front of their homes. The message couldn’t have been clearer: We’re watching, we care, and criminals can find somewhere else to operate.

The growth shocked everyone involved. Front porch vigils turned into block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts, safety demonstrations, and visits from emergency personnel.⁴

"National Night Out turns the clock back to the 1940s and 50s to a time when neighbors knew neighbors, routinely looked out for one another and everyone knew the cop on the beat," Peskin explained.⁵

Events Happening in Your Neighborhood

From Alexandria, Virginia to Forest City, Iowa, communities across America are organizing their own National Night Out celebrations. The variety is stunning:

Lancaster city police are hosting their first-ever event at their station, complete with pizza from House of Pizza and representatives from local organizations.¹⁰

In Munster, Indiana, they’re pulling out all the stops with a community parade, free swimming, over 140 booth participants, K-9 demonstrations, barrel car train rides, and a closing fireworks show.¹¹ The event consistently ranks as one of the top National Night Out celebrations in the country.

Carroll Valley Borough in Pennsylvania is hosting their event at Carroll Commons Park with food trucks, a giant slide, and opportunities to meet local heroes and climb on fire trucks.¹²

Each event tackles community safety differently, but they all accomplish the same goal. They’re rebuilding the community bonds that keep neighborhoods safe rather than just talking about crime prevention.
