Rashida Tlaib Just Pushed Democratic Socialists Past a Milestone That Has Both Parties’ Establishments Worried

DSA Has Already Notched 35 Primary Wins Out of 150 Candidates Backed

Rashida Tlaib did not have to sweat Tuesday night.

She beat Michigan state lawmaker Shanelle Jackson and Inkster Mayor Byron Nolen in the 12th Congressional District primary, clearing her path to a fifth term.

The Democratic Socialists of America celebrated immediately, calling Tlaib "a beacon of hope and courage for those in her district."

The Washington Examiner reported the group has backed 150 candidates this cycle, with 35 already advancing through their primaries or running unopposed – and Tlaib's win adds one more to that column.

Colorado's Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old democratic socialist, just knocked off Rep. Diana DeGette, who has held her seat since 1997.

New York's Darializa Avila Chevalier toppled Rep. Adriano Espaillat, the sitting chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Longtime Democrat incumbents are not losing to Republicans.

They are getting run out of their own party by people who openly admire Bernie Sanders and want Medicare for All written into law.

Fox News noted this is "undeniable that progressives are gaining momentum and attention" heading into November.

Wisconsin state lawmaker Francesca Hong is running for governor as an open socialist and bragging about it online.

In Texas, progressive firebrand Jasmine Crockett jumped into the Senate race and instantly became the national face of the party's leftward lurch.

Republicans did not have to lift a finger to create any of this.

The Democratic base built it themselves, one primary at a time.

Tlaib has been building toward this moment since 2020.

Back then, moderate Rep. Abigail Spanberger begged her own party to stop saying the word socialism out loud.

Tlaib refused to back down – and now the DSA she helped mainstream is eating the Democratic Party from the inside.

Michigan's Senate Primary Just Turned Into a Referendum on Who Runs the Party

National Democrats spent years treating the Squad like a noisy but harmless sideshow.

That confidence is fading fast.

Michigan's marquee Senate primary pit establishment favorite Haley Stevens against progressive Abdul El-Sayed, who pulled in high-profile backing from Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Whoever wins that seat will tell Democrats a lot about which wing actually controls their party heading into a critical November.

Republicans are watching this unfold with something close to delight.

Some are already comparing the moment to 2010, when Tea Party insurgents wiped out established Republicans in primaries only to lose winnable Senate seats that November.

History does not care which party runs the experiment twice.

Democrats now face the same trap, except this time the insurgents are not chasing tax cuts.

They are chasing an agenda built on abolishing ICE, socialized medicine, and taxing success out of existence.

Tlaib's district will not punish her for any of that – it handed her 69.7 percent of the vote in 2024 and will likely do it again.

But the swing-state Democrats now forced to run next to this movement do not have that luxury.

Every ad Republicans need for November just wrote itself in a Michigan ballroom on Tuesday night.

The Democratic Party spent 2020 promising voters it had learned its lesson on socialism.

Six years later, the socialists are the ones handing out the lessons.

Senate Democrats keep insisting this infighting is nothing to worry about.

Try telling that to the moderate Democrats who just watched thirty-year incumbents get bounced by candidates half their age.

Tlaib's fifth term is not an isolated data point – it is proof the DSA does not need to win the White House to win the party.

It already has.
