A San Diego couple watched from an airplane window as a stranger climbed through their second-story window.
Instead of panicking, they texted police in real time and let the family dog handle security.
What their golden retriever did next left officers and the internet in stitches.
A Break-In With the Worst Guard Dog in America
Dante Rowley and his fiancée Stephanie were 30,000 feet in the air when their Ring app lit up.
They spotted a ladder, dragged over from their own shed, leaned up against a second-floor window they'd left cracked.
John Cline, 57, climbed through it.
He stripped down to his undershirt and kicked off his shoes.
He dug through the refrigerator and helped himself to a meal – yogurt, turkey, cheese.
Then he lay down and took a nap.
The whole time, Nash – the couple's 4-year-old golden retriever – kept trotting back with a different toy in his mouth, hoping this new visitor might finally throw one.
That is simply what golden retrievers do.
From the Sky, the Couple Ran the Whole Operation
Rowley didn't wait to land.
He texted the San Diego Police Department the moment he spotted the ladder on his phone.
He handed officers live access to his home security feed while his flight was still climbing.
San Diego police arrived at the Sherman Heights home within five minutes.
They sent in a drone to check the house before anyone walked through the door.
Officers then entered with guns drawn.
Cline was arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary.
Nash greeted the responding officers exactly the way he'd greeted the burglar – tail wagging, toy in mouth, ready to play.
Rowley said he and Stephanie talked officers through the arrest step by step from their seats, phones in hand, still airborne the entire time.
Why This One Went Viral
Home security footage catches break-ins all the time.
It rarely catches a golden retriever trying to make friends with the guy stealing from him.
The footage has already spread across social media, with one station's coverage dubbing Nash the worst guard dog in the country – meant as the highest compliment.
It's the kind of story that makes you laugh out loud and then immediately want to show it to somebody else.
A burglar walked into a house expecting an empty target.
Instead he got a nap, a sandwich, a very persistent dog, and a pair of handcuffs.
Nash, for his part, never did get that game of fetch.
