Scrabble went woke with one change that will leave you shaking your head

Entertainment is being changed to accommodate the delicate sensibilities of younger generations.

Even popular boards are falling victim to this cultural revolution.

And Scrabble went woke with one change that will leave you shaking your head.

Word game Scrabble is one of the most popular board games in history with roughly one-third of households in the U.S. owning a copy according to The History Channel.

But the board game is having a hard time connecting with younger audiences in the digital age.

So the maker of Scrabble in Europe, Mattel, is giving it a refresh in hopes of making it appeal to a younger, more culturally sensitive generation.

Scrabble the woke edition is coming to Europe

Scrabble is getting a new edition for the first time in 75 years to attract players from Gen Z in Europe.

The classic edition of the game will include the new version, Scrabble Together, which is meant to be less competitive.

For decades, Scrabble players racked their brains to come up with words to achieve a high score.

Now the new edition will include help cards, a simplified scoring system, and will allow for teams.

British Scrabble president Gyles Brandreth told BBC Radio that game maker Mattel did market research to determine how to appeal to the youngest generation.

They found that Gen Z didn’t like the “competitive nature” of the word game.

Scrabble Together would be “easier” and “more inclusive” to cater to Gen Z according to him.

“The makers of Scrabble found that younger people, Gen Z people, don’t quite like the competitive nature of Scrabble,” Brandreth said. “They want a game where you can simply enjoy language, words, being together, and having fun creating words.”

Gen Z doesn’t like having to compete

Former World Scrabble Champion Brett Smitheram said the new edition “speaks to a trend in younger people who want to avoid competitive games and sense of losing, instead favoring teamwork and collaboration working towards a fun goal together.”

The change was widely mocked on social media with critics calling it “Woke Scrabble” and “Scrabble for Snowflakes.”

Fox News reported that in the new edition, “cards will provide help, including prompts and clues, which can be selected to match the player’s chosen challenge level. To win, the player must complete the 20 challenges and loses if they have used all the helper cards and cannot complete a goal.”

Mattel vice president for global games Ray Adler told the New York Post that Scrabble Together appeals to people who are “intimidated” by the classic version.

“Scrabble has truly stood the test of time as one of the most popular board games in history, and we want to ensure the game continues to be inclusive for all players,” Alder said. “For anyone who’s ever thought ‘word games aren’t for me’, or felt a little intimidated by the classic game, Scrabble Together mode is an ideal option.”

There’s no word if Scrabble Together is going to come to the U.S. because Hasbro controls its rights in America.

Board games are the latest part of culture to fall victim to the woke mind virus.
