Fast food chains battled for Halloween customers with aggressive promotions this year.
Two major players stood out from the competition with deals customers couldn't refuse.
And Shake Shack and Chipotle just proved that month-long strategy beats one-day gimmicks every single time.
Shake Shack turned October into BOGO month while competitors fumbled
Shake Shack didn't save Halloween promotions for Halloween week.
The burger chain launched rotating BOGO deals on October 1 and kept them rolling for 31 straight days.¹
Customers who used code SPOOKY got two SmokeShack burgers for the price of one from October 1-11.²
Then the deal switched to Chicken Shacks from October 12-21.³
Shake Shack saved the Double ShackBurger BOGO for the Halloween week finale running October 22-31.⁴
Three different premium burgers, three different windows, same simple code: SPOOKY.
That's not promotional theater — that's giving customers real value they can plan around.
Most chains rolled out themed nuggets shaped like bats or slapped orange buns on regular burgers and called it Halloween.
Shake Shack gave people actual savings on menu items they already wanted.
The rotating structure kept customers checking back throughout October instead of showing up once on Halloween and disappearing.
Smart chains understand that sustained engagement beats one-night stunts.
Chipotle celebrated 25 years of Boorito by going bigger than ever
While Shake Shack dominated October with variety, Chipotle owned Halloween itself.
The Boorito promotion started way back in 2000 as a simple burrito-themed costume contest.⁵
Twenty-five years later, Chipotle turned it into a full-scale event with international expansion.
Rewards members who showed up in costume on October 31 between 3 p.m. and close got a $6 entrée.⁶
When burritos normally run $11 to $12 depending on protein choice, that's nearly half off for doing something people were already planning to do anyway.
Chipotle added a TikTok costume contest running October 27 through November 2.⁷
Winners scored a VIP Card worth more than $500 in free Chipotle.⁸
The costume contest kicked off Monday morning at 9 a.m. Pacific Time with fans posting videos using #BooritoCostumeContest.⁹
A panel of judges selected three winners from entries showing off Halloween costumes.¹⁰
This year marked the first time Boorito expanded internationally.¹¹
The tradition that started in the U.S. in 2000 finally reached Europe with £6/€7 entrée offers in the UK and France.¹²
Chipotle also extended hours at 53 college town locations to midnight on Halloween.¹³
That's understanding your customer base — college students want late-night burritos after parties, not 9 p.m. closures.
The competition couldn't match these Halloween strategies
The rest of the fast food industry scrambled to keep up but fell short on sustained value.
White Castle kicked off 5 Days of Deals on Monday exclusively for Craver Nation Rewards members.¹⁴
Daily specials included free small fries October 27, free 6-piece Chicken Rings with purchase October 28, free Dessert On-a-Stick with purchase October 29, $2 off a 10-pack of sliders October 30, and BOGO free combo October 31.¹⁵
Members also got $5 off Crave Cases of 30 sliders from October 29-31 using code BOO.¹⁶
That's five days of deals requiring five different promotions instead of one cohesive strategy.
Auntie Anne's offered Rewards members a Twist or Treat bucket from October 27-31 containing five servings of pretzel nuggets plus a $5 reward for next purchase.¹⁷
SONIC brought back 50-cent corn dogs on Halloween only.¹⁸
Baskin-Robbins offered Rewards members 31% off all scoops on October 31.¹⁹
KFC Rewards members could unlock daily deals through October 31.²⁰
Dunkin' Rewards members earned triple points from October 29-31 on donut boxes.²¹
Every single one of those promotions sounds fine in isolation.
But none matched the sustained value of Shake Shack's month-long BOGO marathon or Chipotle's combination of deep discounts, costume contest prizes, and 25-year brand tradition.
White Castle dropped five different deals across five days with five different requirements.
Good luck remembering what was available when.
SONIC brought back 50-cent corn dogs for one day. Customers showed up Halloween, got their corn dogs, and SONIC lost them for another year.
Baskin-Robbins offered "31% off all scoops." Stand there at the counter doing math in your head figuring out what that actually saves you.
The chains that won made it dead simple: show up, use one code, get real savings.
Shake Shack and Chipotle understood what everyone else missed
Shake Shack ran three different BOGOs across October — SmokeShack, then Chicken Shack, then Double ShackBurger.
Same code every time: SPOOKY.
You didn't need a calculator or a calendar. You just needed to remember four words when October rolled around.
Chipotle's been doing Boorito since 2000. Twenty-five years of the same tradition, Halloween after Halloween. Show up in costume, get your burrito cheap.
This year they finally took it international — UK and France got their first taste of Boorito.
That's not testing the waters. That's knowing exactly what you've got after a quarter century of proof.
The $6 entrée? That's cutting the price nearly in half. And customers were already planning to wear costumes anyway.
Chipotle added a TikTok contest with $500 VIP Cards. Three winners. Over 500 bucks in free food.
You know what that does? Gets thousands of people posting videos with your brand all over social media for a week straight.
Other chains tried running different promotions every night with different codes and different requirements.
Nobody wants to work that hard for a discount on chicken nuggets.
Halloween spending hit $13.1 billion this year.²²
Chains either grabbed their share with real deals or watched customers walk past their doors.
The restaurant industry got hammered all year by inflation. Combo meals crossed $12. Families started eating at home instead of driving through.
Shake Shack and Chipotle figured out that October was the month to fight back with actual value instead of themed packaging nobody asked for.
Both chains turned Halloween into a month-long event with promotions simple enough that customers actually used them.
Next October, the smart chains will copy this playbook.
The dumb ones will keep slapping orange buns on regular menu items and wondering why nobody cares.
