The Left was hoping that Jon Stewart would crush Greg Gutfed. But then the ratings came in

Feb 23, 2024

Back in the day, Jon Stewart was a hard-hitting social critic, and his wry observations were relevant to the social conversation.

The Daily Show used to be mandatory viewing for people who were interested in cutting-edge social commentary, but when Jon Stewart left the show, ratings tanked, and it faded to irrelevance.

The Left pulled Stewart back into the fray to take on anti-woke Greg Gutfeld. But then the ratings came in.

Comedy Central is partying like it’s 1999

Jon Stewart turned The Daily Show into a national phenomenon when he took the program over in 1999.

The comedian hosted the Comedy Central show for 16 seasons before retiring.

At that time, he turned the show into a must-see for the key demographic of young viewers.

And they watched for more than laughs.

In fact, a Pew survey back in 2010 showed that 10% of The Daily Show’s audience watched Stewart as their main source of news.

Stewart mocked the idea of people getting their news from a comedy show – but it didn’t stop him from adding his liberal views into the program and getting fairly regular digs in at conservatives.

The show’s ratings and prominence in the culture fell off a cliff after Stewart was replaced by Trevor Noah.

But now Noah is gone, and Stewart was brought back as a part-time replacement.

When news breaks…we fix it

Stewart is only operating The Daily Show desk once per week.

And, to his credit, the ratings are up from the dark days of Noah as the host.

But they’re not up as high as the Leftists were hoping.

Stewart’s first night back drew close to one million viewers, with Neilson estimating 930,000 viewers.

That’s the most people watching a single episode of The Daily Show in six years.

However, it wasn’t enough to knock Fox News Channel’s Greg Gutfeld off his perch as the new King of Late Night – and that was the goal of the Left.

The race wasn’t even close, with Gutfeld more than doubling Stewart’s numbers.

According to Nielsen Gutfeld! It was watched by 2.2 million people.

And Gutfeld also defeated Stewart in the coveted key demo of 25–54-year-olds.

That contest was much closer with Gutfeld! Only edging out The Daily Show 328,000 to 320,000.

Before Fox News shifted Gutfeld’s timeslot to 10pm Eastern Standard Time – following the channel’s axing of top-rated host Tucker Carlson – the conservative funnyman routinely defeated all of the left-wing late-night hosts, including Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Jimmy Fallon.

The constant and consistent ratings victories earned Gutfeld the unofficial crown of “King of Late Night.”

Third-rate reporters giving the first-degree the second news happens

Stewart’s return to The Daily Show desk saw him make a single joke about President Joe Biden’s age when he said the 2024 rematch is “too old men” – which also knocks former President Donald Trump’s age.

And that was enough to trigger his hoard of Leftist followers.

Because of the joke, the Rolling Stones – among others – questioned if Stewart is the right man for the joke, citing the huge stakes, or in other words, how important it is that all media is on board making sure Trump doesn’t regain the White House.

The cry from the Left has been that Stewart’s “both sides are bad” approach doesn’t work in 2024.

The numbers don’t lie, and the numbers show that Stewart’s approach – which still favors the Left – works better than Comedy Central’s trying before him.

But it doesn’t work as well as Gutfeld’s approach.
