Tim Allen is one of the most successful sitcom stars in TV history.
His journey in Hollywood took an expected turn.
And Tim Allen revealed one secret about his career that took Hollywood by surprise.
Tim Allen changed his mind about doing another sitcom
Comedian Tim Allen is starring in his third sitcom for ABC with his new show Shifting Gears.
He became a star playing Tim “The Toolman” Taylor for eight seasons on Home Improvement in the 1990s.
Allen returned to ABC in 2011 on the sitcom Last Man Standing where it ran for six seasons before finishing its run on Fox.
The 71-year-old thought that his sitcom days were over until he found exactly what he was looking for in Shifting Gears.
“I didn’t really want to do another one,” Allen told In Touch Weekly.
The character he plays on the show, Matt Parker, is what drew him to the show.
Parker is a widower who owns a classic car restoration shop when his estranged daughter played by actress Kat Dennings and her two kids move back in with him.
He was able to incorporate some of his real-life passions into the show.
The classic car restoration shop in the show is modeled after one Allen owns in North Hollywood.
“That’s what I’ve always wanted to play. I get to be more of a creative guy in grief over the loss of a wife. It’s a comedy, though!” Allen joked.
The sitcom format drew Tim Allen in
Sitcoms have been going extinct on broadcast TV with wokeness making so much humor off-limits in Hollywood.
Shifting Gears has become a hit on ABC and the streaming service Hulu.
A return to starring in a sitcom gave him the chance to do something he loves.
“I love the sitcom format because of my stand-up,” Allen explained. “I get to be in a live audience situation. When they said, ‘What would you do if you did another one?’ I said, ‘If a guy had just lost his wife and he’s still able to be funny and [work on] a relationship with an older daughter … and I’d like to build hot rods!’”
Allen, a father of two girls, was able to bring some of his perspective as a parent to the show.
“Kat Dennings said, ‘[Some people] get into a relationship because [their] parents don’t like it. Your parents tell you not to do something, so you do it.’ My daughters are not like that. I mean, we’ve had our problems, of course,” Allen stated.
The Home Improvement star noted that his character was very different from the previous two that he played.
“He’s more like me. I’m more of an artist. I was a design student and a philosopher and my standup comedy is really about messing with people in a good way,” Allen said. “I came from a huge family run by women. So my perspective is very different about men. I don’t think we run things. So I want this to be that guy. He’s not a man’s man in that term, and he wasn’t trying to be anything but what he does.”
Tim Allen has breathed life into the network sitcom format with his new show.
