Country superstar Toby Keith is known for his laid-back party songs, strong, meaningful ballads, and booming voice.
He’s also become known for his outspoken political statements and his unwillingness to kowtow to the woke mob.
And now Toby Keith just gave this update on his battle with stomach cancer and the one thing that keeps him going.
In June 2022, country music legend Toby Keith announced he was battling stomach cancer.
Leaning on his faith
He also said he had been undergoing chemotherapy for several months.
“So far, so good,” he reassured his loyal fans, noting that he needed time “to breathe.”
Recently, just ahead of receiving the Country Icon Award at the People’s Choice Country Awards, Keith spoke of what he did with some of those breaths.
The 62-year-old Oklahoma country singer proved yet again that he isn’t afraid to tell it like it is and not afraid to discuss his Christian faith.
“I lean on my faith, and I just pray,” Keith told Fox News Digital. “You gotta do what you gotta do, and I don’t know how people do it without faith. […] That’s what I did.”
Keith made it crystal clear that faith “was [his] rock throughout his battle with cancer.”
After being presented his award by fellow country star and Christian Blake Shelton, Keith started with a joke, “I bet y’all never thought you would see me in skinny jeans.”
While Keith made sure to thank his family, his fans, his band, and all his collaborators, he singled out his biggest thanks to his creator.
“I want to thank the Almighty for allowing me to be here tonight. He’s been riding shotgun with me for a little while,” Keith said.
And Keith has good reason to be thankful, as he appears to be winning his fight with cancer.
He recently told E! News, “I feel pretty good. […] It’s a little bit of a roller coaster. You get good days and, you know, you’re up and down, up and down. It’s always zero to 60 and 60 to zero, but I feel good today.”
And in June, the musician told the Oklahoman that his tumor had shrunk by a third and everything was “in a real positive trend.”
At the People’s Choice Country Awards show, Keith played his ballad “Don’t Let the Old Man In” from Clint Eastwood’s 2018 film The Mule.
His strong performance caused the audience to tear up.
Keith told NBC about his choice of songs, “Coming back on TV for the first time and performing live in front of a live audience, I thought it was fitting.”
In the song, Keith sings the lyrics, “When he rides up on his horse,/ And you feel that cold, bitter wind, / Look out your window and smile. / Don’t let the old man in.”
And Keith, never one to leave his fans wanting, had more good news, saying he looks forward to returning to performing in the fall if “everything goes good.”
One thing is sure: Keith’s faith is strong, and he isn’t afraid to share it.
