The impact ruptured a gas line, setting up the perfect storm for disaster.

Two bystanders who happened to be in the area saw the crash and didn’t hesitate for a second.

They rushed to the mangled SUV and pulled the driver and passenger from the wreckage just minutes before the unthinkable happened.

Herriman Mayor Lorin Palmer took to Facebook to thank first responders and local residents who stepped up during the crisis.

"Thank you to those first responders that handled such a crazy scene with such professionalism," Palmer wrote.

"And to the dozens of residents that have reached out offering to open their homes or to volunteer at an evacuation center . . . thank you! I love how we respond to these unfortunate events in our city . . . we truly live in a great community. Prayer again to all involved tonight!"

The mayor’s response highlighted something special about small-town America.
