Neil went to bed on Christmas night expecting nothing out of the ordinary.

But when he woke up the day after Christmas, something was terribly wrong.

The stroke struck while Neil slept, leaving him unable to move properly when he awoke.

"I’m, like, ‘What’s going on?’ And my left leg wouldn’t work, and my left arm wouldn’t work. So I had to get help out of bed. I couldn’t push myself up to get myself comfortable in bed. And I had to have help," Neil told SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation with Eddie Trunk.¹

The severity of his condition became clear as Neil struggled with basic mobility and faced an uncertain prognosis.

"I went from a wheelchair to a walker to a cane to — I can walk now, but for five months it was just off and on, not knowing what’s gonna happen. And the doctor said that I probably wouldn’t be on stage again," Neil explained. "I had to learn to walk again."²

The medical emergency forced Mötley Crüe to postpone their Las Vegas residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM by seven months.

At the time, the band only said Neil needed a "medical procedure" without giving fans the full story.

But the real shock came when Neil went in for brain scans.

Doctors discovered the devastating truth about his brain

Medical testing revealed the shocking scope of Neil’s health battles.

The Christmas incident wasn’t Neil’s first encounter with stroke.

"Four strokes throughout the years. Two of ’em I didn’t even know I had," Neil revealed in the interview.³

Medical scans showed evidence of multiple strokes over the years.

"One of ’em was a mini stroke that happened and I just lost feeling in my hand. And that was it. And I got over that pretty quickly. But then this last one, it was a big one," Neil said.⁴

The neurologist explained that doctors could tell Neil had had previous strokes "because they could see it in your brain. It’s scarred right around the same spot. I had four scars in my brain, and the neurologist said those are all strokes."⁵

What Neil said he’s learned is that minor strokes can occur without the person realizing what happened.

According to the source, Neil said doctors told him that he had a blood clot in his leg that ran up to his brain.

At 64 years old, Neil faced the possibility that his performing days were over.

The rock legend refused to go down without a fight

Medical professionals delivered a grim assessment to the rock star.

They told Neil he probably wouldn’t be on stage again.

"And I was, like, ‘No, man. I can’t do that.’ And so I just tried. I worked my butt off to get back in shape to go on stage," Neil said.⁶

Neil’s recovery required months of uncertainty and intensive rehabilitation.

Some days were better than others, and he never knew what to expect when he woke up.

But the singer committed to an intensive rehabilitation program.

His daily routine now includes working with a physical therapist who visits his home.

"I was really sad to have to cancel those shows, but I just wasn’t ready yet. I wasn’t ready to be back on stage yet. It was really sad, but it’s really worth it now, ’cause I can get on stage and sing and all that good stuff," Neil explained.⁷

The postponed Vegas shows meant disappointing thousands of fans who had bought tickets.

But Neil knew he had to be honest about his limitations and focus on getting better.

His father died of a stroke in March 2021, making Neil’s own battle even more personal.

Mötley Crüe is back and stronger than ever

Friday and Saturday night, Vince Neil proved that reports of his retirement were greatly exaggerated.

Mötley Crüe returned to the stage at Dolby Live in Las Vegas for their rescheduled residency shows.

It’s been a long road back for the frontman who helped define ’80s metal.

Neil’s determination to overcome four strokes – including one that left him unable to walk – shows the same fighting spirit that made Mötley Crüe legendary.

At an age when most people are thinking about slowing down, Neil refused to let his medical crisis end his career.
