Kevin Costner made one surprising confession about Yellowstone no one saw coming

Kevin Costner conquered the world of TV on Yellowstone after a successful career in movies.

Now he’s opening up about his time on the hit show.

And Kevin Costner made one surprising confession about Yellowstone no one saw coming.

Kevin Costner talks about joining the cast of the Yellowstone

Academy Award winner Kevin Costner had built a successful career in the movie business before he made the switch to TV when he joined the cast of the Paramount Network drama Yellowstone in 2018.

Costner had a limited body of work on TV when he made the decision to star as John Dutton.

His portrayal of Dutton turned the show into a smash hit and rejuvenated his career.

Costner is promoting his new movie Horizon: An American Saga but the press and public are still asking him about Yellowstone.

During an interview on the Armchair Expert podcast, Costner talked about what drew him to the show.

Yellowstone was just a really great script, boy, here comes this boring song from me, but it was just a great script,” Costner said.

His return for the show’s final season is in doubt over conflicts with the show’s producers.

But he praised the work that Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan did with the show’s story.

“I just believed in the world. I knew it was a soap opera,” Costner said. “I knew we should all be in jail. We’ve all killed people there and so you throw logic out the window a little bit.”

Costner had fun playing the show’s star John Dutton.

“But he [Sheridan] has a great ear and he just wrote that stuff really authentically and it was good fun and he wrote my part especially well and Kelly’s [Reilly] part, so listen, I had a lot of fun with it,” Costner continued. “So listen, I had a lot of fun with it. It was really good, I recognized that, so I did it the best I could possibly do it.”

Kevin Costner never planned to stay as long as he did on Yellowstone

Yellowstone was Costner’s first major TV project and he didn’t intend to have a long run on the show when he signed up for it.

He traveled to Europe to sell the show to buyers over there where he saw how many seasons he would do.

“I looked over at the guy that brought me and he was wanting me to say I’d be in 7 [seasons] and I said ‘no, I’ve agreed to do 3, but I think this is good enough that it can carry on,’” Costner recalled.

Costner said that he initially didn’t think it was going to be a series.

“I’m doing it and I was the only one there and they liked how that discussion went,” Costner said. “So I sold this one season for them and I had finally agreed to do three, I thought it was going to be one long one, but then it turned out it was gonna be a series.”

Taking a risk and switching to TV ended up being one of the best decisions of Kevin Costner’s career.
