Kevin Costner’s passion project could spell doom to the end of Yellowstone

May 3, 2024

Fans of Yellowstone are wondering if Kevin Costner will return. It is one of the biggest questions in the television business.

Now, there is some clarity about the actor’s future plans.

Kevin Costner put his house on the line for a passion project that could end Yellowstone and bankrupt the actor.

Yellowstone returning to production in May

Yellowstone star Cole Hauser – who plays Rip Wheeler – revealed to Whiskey Riff that the series is set to begin production on the final half of season five in May.

Whether or not star Kevin Costner will return as John Dutton for the conclusion of the series is still up in the air.

Costner has said he’s willing to return and series co-creator Taylor Sheridan is reportedly open to him returning for a brief appearance to wrap up his character’s storyline.

The trouble between the star and the hit show began over scheduling issues related to his latest movie, Horizon: An American Saga.

Horizon is slated to be a four-part, 12-hour epic on the settlement of the American West starting during the Civil War.

Chapter One and Chapter Two are slated to be released in theaters this summer.

Now, the final two chapters in the saga could potentially throw a monkey wrench in Costner’s return to Yellowstone.

Costner filming the third and fourth Horizon films this spring

Horizon is a passion project that Costner started developing the story for back in 1988.

His divorce from his ex-wife Christine Baumgartner revealed that he put $20 million of his own money into getting the project off of the ground.

He also mortgaged part of his oceanfront estate in Santa Barbara, California, to help ensure the movies were properly funded.

“I’ve mortgaged 10 acres on the water in Santa Barbara where I was going to build my last house,” Costner said. “But I did it without a thought. It has thrown my accountant into a f***ing conniption fit. But it’s my life, and I believe in the idea and the story.”

Costner co-wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the first two Horizon films.

Now he’s set to begin work on third and fourth films this spring.

A report from the Durango Herald in Durango, Colorado, revealed that some of the shooting for the third movie begins on May 15 with a casting call for extras put out.

That would be around the same time that Yellowstone is set to return to filming.

Costner has invested tens of millions of his own money into the Horizon films and views them as the capstone of his decorated career.

Given his hands-on involvement in every aspect of the movies, his spring and summer could be occupied working on his passion project.

And he still has promotional work to do before the release of the first two Horizon films.

That could potentially limit his ability to make an appearance in the final episodes of Yellowstone.
